however often I describe what is and isn't recyclable I find cardboard and plastic bottles in the general bin.

maddening!

Bloody awful at it.

Drives me insane. Sometimes I go on strike and am like, fine we will just chuck everything out then. Then two hours later I am guiltily digging it all out the bin and putting it in the recycling.

Its like I recycle, and he counteracts it.

so you are not alone.

malovitt · 06/04/2008 22:51

He knows it would be more than his life was worth to chuck away recyclable stuff - so no.

LaidbackinEngland · 06/04/2008 22:52

Is it rebellion or laziness ?

jingleyjen · 06/04/2008 22:53

no, DH is in the driving seat in this house with recycling..
There are times when rubbish has backed up in the house, I just want to throw things in the black bin to get rid of them.. DH empties it out and sorts it all..

Pavlovthecat · 06/04/2008 22:54

I feel like his mother sometimes.

He is the same with the water usage. Puts the shower on for half hour before getting into it so it is not cold. Runs the tap for ages before filling a glass, as 'you have to let it run first'. Not for 10 mins! He runs an entire bowl full of water to put a pan into soak, even though we have a dishwasher, and he has no problems putting on the dishwasher half empty because we need two plates for dinner!!!

ipanemagirl · 06/04/2008 22:55

There is something called 'strategic incompetence' isn't there?

Remembering birthdays?
Handwashing?
Squeezing the toothpaste from the bottom?

It has taken him forever but he has just about mastered that drinks cans are recyclable. But let's not rinse them shall we? Let' fling them into the box dripping nasty sugar!

Batteries he hasn't learned yet. That's like rocket science for him I think!

My dh is great at recycling - I'm the terrible one!

ipanemagirl · 06/04/2008 23:00

So it's not gender then!

LOL ipanemagirl!
You got it right I think!
A few more?
Putting tops back on jars and then back in the fridge/cupboard.
Putting clothes in the laundry basket not next to it.

its absolute laziness! For me anyway, DH knows that if he does not do it, I will as I cant bear to see a huge cornflake packet stuffed in the bin!

Pavlovthecat · 06/04/2008 23:05

ipanemagirl - I have to say, I know one man, who is much better recycler(a word?)/water saver/energy saver than anyone I know.

He has a ridiculously low water meter bill and same for other energy bills. He is a 'man of nature'.

NorthernLurker · 06/04/2008 23:05

Nope - I love stuffing boxes and jars in the bin

I'm kidding - just about

Threadworm · 06/04/2008 23:14

My DH is rubbish at recycling.

He seems to have the attidude that there is only an obligation on him once the council, the government, and international capitalism have completely cleaned up their acts.

ipanemagirl · 06/04/2008 23:19

LOL Threadworm (mater) know that attitude!

LOL Pavlov with empathy

Not the same thing ethically but why does my dh
put
empty
boxes
away
in
cupboards.
Completely
empty
cereal
boxes? How can that make any sense at all?

I'm a huge recycler but wash stuff out like a maniac. My sister on the other hand resents the water and won't put milk bottles in the dishwasher just gives them a cursory sloosh. She glares at me if I wash them properly!! "They get washed at the DAIRY"
My sis is like my MIL they both think they know the right way to do everything!

DH does that too .
I rinse, if it can go in dishwasher, I make space. There is always space for more in the dishwasher. always. But is is new, and we are on a water meter. That is also quite new and its like a little game to me. How little water can we use today. I am very very sad as I like to check it each day. and like to see how little we can use the dishwasher, ie not putting it on until we really have to. DH thinks I am mad. he says he will not stop washing just so I can satisfy my obsession with saving water, and he will use the dishwasher as its meant to be used...to clean dishes, so they are clean when he needs them!

He thinks we compliment each other!

Pavlovthecat · 06/04/2008 23:29

Califrau - oh, a hoarder as well?!! I am there too.
DH has kept the enormous box his macbook came in in the loft. Just in case? Just in case what? Its registered at the local Apple shop, he has a laptop bag? what is the box for?!!!! It already needed to go back for a fault, and the box was not required.

hotchocscot · 06/04/2008 23:40

yep my hubby is pretty bad at recycling too, i'm forever getting things out of the bin and relocating them to the recycling one! I find it irritating but then i gloat in my ethical smugness and that makes it all ok

Yes!! It is sheer laziness...

RGPargy · 07/04/2008 09:17

DP is lazy when it comes to recycling, unless i am standing next to him when he DARES to put anything recycle-able in the bin!! I'm always telling him "NOOOOPE! That goes in the recycle bin!!".

cmotdibbler · 07/04/2008 09:25

Mines good on recyling, but can never quite remember what goes in the Bokashi bins. He's also not that good on remembering to use reusable bags for random shopping, but always takes the big bags for the supermarket.

midnightexpress · 07/04/2008 09:27

Oh yes, mine too. We can do plastic bottles here, but not glass or cardboard in our household recycling and he keeps putting cardboard in there. It's as if he thinks they should recycle it, so he'll put it in anyway.
