What washing powder should I use?

I've been using Method washing liquid for years, whilst feeling slightly guilty for the plastic bottle and in the knowledge that liquid is not as good as powder.

However, my liquid is no longer available, so I'm looking for a recommendation for an environmentally friendly washing powder that works. My local refill shop sells Sesu, but I have used their dishwasher powder and I wasn't that impressed. I have previously used Friendly Soap's washing powder, which I liked, but it was too expensive to pay to have it delivered because it was heavy.

What can I use?!?

I use Dri Pak liquid soap which can be used for a lots of things. So pure and can be bought online.

I recommend Aldi or Lidl non bio laundry powder. Both are cruelty free, in boxes that I recycle and good value for money. The Aldi powder is very concentrated and bubbly! If you did want to carry on using liquid would bulk buying online in 5litre containers be an option?

You can use washing balls - there reusable plastic so no need to buy anything else.

Eco-Egg and if you want a smell , a tiny splash of liquid that smells nice .

Powder is better for the machine , I switch between powders for main wash (I'm ploughing through a box of Sainsbury non bio at the moment ) , I add a scoop of Astonish Stain Powder if I need to , or Ecover Apple Blossom&Freeshia for dark/black washing .

Aldi Coconut if it's in stock when I;m instore
Not a fan of the Lidl one , smelled fusty .

Use less than you think , the Sainsbury one is really cncentrated , I use a metal mouthwash cup , my machine is 10kg .

I've thought about using some Dr Bronner liquid soap ( you can use it on pretty much anything ) but I fear an Ibiza Foam Party in my washing machine !

It’s not the cheapest option… but I’m obsessed with Tallow + Ash.
It’s made by a group of 6 people and has only been around for a year. Vegan, plant-based products, cruelty free, carbon neutral (love it!) and the bottles they deliver are made from recycled plastic (if I remember rightly ocean plastic? So effectively clearing our oceans 🌊) but they also provide you with refills so you do not have to keep buying the bottles 😇 - their fragrances use essential oils so in certain laundry shampoos and conditioners they are more subtle whereas others the fragrance is slightly more ‘in your face’ but love their concept. They’re also baby safe, sensitive skin safe and pet safe (refuse to use bleaching agents). They also do whitening products for your whites and deep stain removers etc

I would however suggest investing in a eco-scent ball for the dryer if you use one or washing ball for the more subtle fragrances - I use a washing line to dry my clothes so fragrance is fine but sometimes in the dryer it can be 50/50 depending on the scent you choose (as with a lot of eco friendly products sadly) x

You also get 50% off on your first purchase and every £1 you spend they put into a reward scheme which can eventually get you a lifetime supply for free, a wash bag, free products etc. So, I’ve been passing on the discount links to my friends and a few mums on here who seem interested, if you like you like - regardless hope you find what you are looking for 💜 xx

You need to try Distinctive washing powder. Only need half to 1 scoop and no other products at all to wash. All manufactured in the UK in small limited edition batches - scents with amazing masculine luxury fragrances. It's not expensive compared to other products when you buy in their bulk Kraft paper option. Especially as you've no stain remover or fabric softener to buy. It lifts everything even if you need to soak large items clean in the bath like curtains or blinds.

I use Lidl’s non-bio powder as the box is recyclable.

Yes, no gunky stuff building up in the machine! It also works well for the sensitive eczema skin in our house.

BunnyRuddington · 31/08/2025 19:04

Yeah a couple of us have a skin condition. Not eczema but we still have to be careful and tge Lidl Non-Bio powder is great.

I use Ecover because we have a shop locally that refills up the bottles so I figure that has to be good? But I just assume they're actually eco-friendly, they might not be particularly and they just did a good advertising number on me a few years back

We have one shop that does Ecover refills and another that does Miniml which I think I now prefer after trying them both.

Nsky62 · 31/08/2025 19:48

Bio d, great, cheaper than Ecover, I buy it at health food shop or online.
Great stuff

BunnyRuddington · 31/08/2025 20:07

Sorry I should have made my last post clearer.

I use Miniml refills for things like washing up liquid and toilet cleaner. Still using the Lidl powder for washing clothes Smile
