Eco living - what's worked and what hasn't

What have you done lately for eco living? What's worked or not?

For me:-

  • shampoo bars Garnier, tried some others which I wasn't keen on but saw Garnier did them, tried one and liked it.
  • Soap - can't recall brand but it's a cardboard one, lemon scent, Tescos. I try to use soaps more now.
  • Reusable and compostable coloured sort of J clothes (not J) - in pastel colours.
  • E-cloth
  • Reusable makeup remover pads
  • I did use recycled tin foil but its expensive
  • Tescos paper sandwich bags (you can recycle)
  • Heating engineer for maintenance of boiler was impressed that I don't have hot water/heating whacked up (I do for baths!) but otherwise not.
  • Recycled tooth harps for flossing teeth
  • May be more but can't think?
  • Use water butt in garden
  • Use compostable food bin
  • Wash and recycle what council takes away and take bags which can be recycled at large supermarkets there plus pill packets in Superdrug
  • Flask to keep hot water in
  • Grow more of my own fruit and veg where I can

Any others?

Bar soap with only a few ingredients, no palm oil or chemicals or scent (currently All in One) But leaving it for a long time unwrapped in the airing cupboard to harden it seems to help make them last longer,)

If You Care paper bags don't always need ot be thrown away after one use, e.g. having had a sandwich inside would not seem to mean they can;t have another, or can;t be filled with something needing to go in the fridge or freezer..Using a few drops of cooking oil, wiped anround the inside with a hand, seems to make them work as waxed paper alternatives, for the freezer . These are not ways the firm suggests, it is just miserliness plus dislike of avoidable purchasing.

Box Roll toilet roll, made from UK source waste paper
I couldn’t get my head round the sustainability of making toilet roll from virgin material, or shipping it round the planet.

I live in dairy/mixed farming countryside. We get milk and eggs delivered from a farm 3 miles away. We eat very little meat (I don’t meat all), but most of what we do it comes from local farms.

Hybrid car charged via solar panels. Admittedly this needs significant upfront investment. I’m fortunate that the car comes with my job.

Heavy use of Vinted/Charity Shops/Ebay/School uniform exchange, or “buy it once” quality clothing etc.

Holidays by train, ferry or driving, rather than flying.
