It sets off my alarm that detects carbon monoxide, smoke and other impurities.

But is it bad to put it down drains,

Or tip a whole bottle down the loo.

Fair enough, thank you lljkk.

I've now confessed my mistake to DH, who is feeling smug now. Damn!

alkaline is as bad for the environment as acids.
it changes the ph of wherever the water goes to afterwards - eg rivers. and makes it harder for native species to breathe etc. the end result is that algae (or some other alkali - tolerant organism) can take over, take the nutrients from the native species and so the habitat changes.
or something like, that, been a while since my degree / masters.

but it is bad to tip a whole load down the sink.

Hmm
PeachesMcLean · 22/03/2008 20:18

Scienceteacher, would you care to elaborate?

OP posts:
Cappuccino · 22/03/2008 20:18

it is bad for fish

it can also react with other cleaners and give off toxic gas

McDreamy · 22/03/2008 20:19

It doesn't do much except turn everything white!! No point putting it down your toilet as it won't don anything.

Cappuccino · 22/03/2008 20:20

yes

it's probably more harmful than the germs tbh

McDreamy · 22/03/2008 20:20

Oh and domestos ........it doesn't kill 99.9% of all known germs dead - that's crap!
