Sorry, thought you were just looking for a use for the sandpit so as not to waste it. Didn't read op properly.

Strawberries should be good if you eat a lot of them. What about peas using some poles stuck in for them to grow up? LOVE fresh garden peas!

Salady stuff, like rocket, baby onions, lettuce, radishes maybe. Or, what about herbs like parsley, chives, thyme, basil, oregano & fennel?

Now I read that as 'where can I grow old in a sandpit'

It's been a tiring weekend..

What a brilliant idea! I've had an old sandpit lurking behind the shed for years and it never occurred to me to plant things in it.
I think strawberries would do quite well but I think the best bet is salad leaves or how about something more permanent like a herb garden?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 10/03/2008 14:37

I think stuff that doesn't have deep roots - so root veg such as carrots will be out. I think courgette plants get too big.

Lettuce/salad leaves would be good. Ditto strawberries.

You will need to make some holes in the bottom of the sandpit for drainage.
