Is there any point in having a compost bin when I don't really "do" gardening???

and if so

a) what sort of stuff (other than the obvious potato and carrot peelings) can I put it in

b) what do I do with the stuff once it's composted???

Well, yes, I think so...

the thing is, I do "do" gardening, and I've been religiously chucking stuff in my compost bin for about a year and a half now, but haven't got much compost out!

I was bemoaning this fact to my singularly disinterested dh earlier.

If I ever do get decent compost out, I'll chuck it on my flower beds to improve the crappy clay soil I have, but in the meantime I just feel virtuous that I've put loads of kitchen waste in there that would otherwise have become landfill.

I put all veg peelings in there, a bit of shredded/torn up card (inside of kitchen rolls etc), teabags, coffee grinds from the perc, crushed egg shells and a bit of grass cuttings- not many of these, because they go slimy and smelly- not good!

but what would I do with the compost??

We donate all our stuff to a relative that does do gardening

Any veg peelings
Egg shells
Egg boxes and loo rolls

FAQ yes, yes, yes. We moved into this house 4 years ago and got a free compost bin from the council. We eat tons of veg so have loads of veg waste. We have a big garden and so even just with hedge trimmings, grass cuttings and the veg waste we have never "harvested " the compost but all our waste for 4 years is contained in 1 compost bin. I think it's amazing but maybe I'm just easily impressed!

If you don't want the compost, I bet you wouldn't have to ask more than a couple of neighbours before finding someone who would love to have it! We put in:- fruit cores, pips, peel etc, veg peelings, teabags, at least partially crushed egg shells, egg boxes which are broken (whole ones are given to a neighbour who gives them to a friend who re-uses them), occasional grass cuttings and sometimes shredded paper.
