Natural fibre vegan mattress?

We really need to replace our old mattress and I feel overwhelmed by choices. I don't want to go trying them in the high street as the high street just don't offer the kind of thing I want.

Our 17 year old mattress is 100% natural organic latex, ordered from Germany, but is now definitely past its best. We have a nice wool mattress topper which I love, and I would buy a replacement wool topper for the new bed as it is quite old too, though not as old as the bed.

However, I am struggling to find the right mattress. I love the latex mattress but I don't want another as it it's so floppy it makes it really difficult to turn, so we rarely do it. We're not getting any younger.

I like wool but don't want a pocket sprung wool filled mattress having once had what should have been a great mattress with wool for DS2 which I believe ended up bringing moths into our house, resulting in us having to replace all of our nearly new wool carpets which became moth infested.

This was a number of years ago and the house is now moth free, but it is not something I am willing to risk again as moths inside wool filled mattresses are very hidden. It was a terrible experience and as with wool carpets, I would never go there again!

I also have dust mite allergies so for that natural latex is fantastic. I really do not want a mattress with fire retardant chemicals and would prefer natural materials over synthetic. I would be happy with latex/cotton or other plant based materials. A lot of so called latex mattresses are a mix of synthetic and natural latex which I don't want. An option might be pocket sprung with latex, or something else?

So I guess I'm looking for a decent quality vegan chemical free natural fibre mattress that is also comfortable and reasonably soft, but supportive. I'm a bit princess and the pea when it comes to beds and would rather buy something decent that lasts a long time and is also natural enough that is will biodegrade when it gets to landfill.

I have done lots of searching on Google and have found various options but would prefer recommendations from actual people here, especially from people who actually have tried them. Budget around £1000 to £2000 for super king size. We will keep our existing wooden bed frame.

Have a look at Dojo Ecoshop. They do natural mattresses: wool and latex, but also other materials such as coir, so you might find something suitable there. We had one of their mattresses for DD years ago and it was great.

@MissVantaBlack, thanks a lot for your reply about the Dojo Ecoshop. Their latex mattress looks quite similar to our ancient one. It was interesting to read that they don't make superking for that size at it is too heavy and difficult to manoeuvre and care for properly. That has been our experience too, turning it is a nightmare as it it really floppy and heavy and has no handles.

In the end we decided to go for a pocket sprung mattress. We have ordered the superking Cotton 1500 from Warren Evans. We are also going to get a wool mattress topper from Devon Duvets, since we like sleeping on wool but just don't want it inside the mattress.

What does vegan mean in this context?

@bellac11, thanks for you reply, actually I've found something I want now. Above post explained the situation.

I hope you don’t me posting on this thread after all this time but I would be grateful for an update of how your mattress is holding up after a year. I’m in a similar situation of wanting a natural one (as far as conveniently possible) without wool (I got a lovely wool mattress about a year ago and now our wool carpets are infested and need replacing!). Would you recommend the pocket sprung cotton mattress and/or is there already a visible dip?

We totally love our cotton Warren Evans mattress, it is really comfortable and doesn't sag. We do make sure we either flip or rotate it monthly. However, I had a look and they don't seem to make a wool free one anymore.

So sorry to hear about your wool mattress/ carpets, moths are a nightmare aren't they?

Thank you, that’s really helpful. I’m glad you found something suitable. I will keep an eye out for a cotton/vegan pocket sprung mattress. Yes, the moths are a right pain! There’s worse things in the world but it’s just a fair amount of unwanted bother. Thank you for your kind words.🙂

@LilacMcMiaow hi also in the same boat except I’m allergic to wool and am finding it hard to find a decent mattress without plastics , polyesters and recycled materials I’m finding it impossible to find a fully cotton mattress was wondering did you ever find anything ? If so what did you go for .

Interested in this thread. There is another problem, with offgassing in new things, and with some mattresses or furniture covers being treated with toxic fire retardent, due to legal requirements. (That's similar to the drawback of waterproofed fabrics especially in clothing.)
