If you live in a cycle/walk friendly place - where is it please?!

So I can move there!!

We only live two miles from a very nice small town but the roads are appalling and walking next to them is either unpleasant or downright dangerous.

We do have some bridle paths etc but not enough. For instance we have a farm shop up one road and a nursery up another and you honestly could not walk to either of them although they are not far, because YOU WOULD DIE.

It makes me so p*ed off because it's just making everyone get in their stupid cars. Or if like us have gone down to one car and get quite frustrated.

So, I am interested to hear from you, whether it's town or country, if you are blessed in this way, and where you are. Thanks.

Come to Milton Keynes - we have the redways

TREBUCHET · 07/02/2008 14:24

Come to Barnt Green, its lovely here!

In the Worcestershire hills, with a village high street, we need rarely go to a supermarket and miles of tramping to be done to lakes, woods and hills.

We can walk to shops, school and baba groups and get the train to the city within 25 mins.

Rather too many hairdressers thouhg...!

Elf · 08/02/2008 13:03

Both of those do sound lovely. The Milton Keynes cycle routes look great. If only the planners could try to put that sort of thing into old towns. The hills, lakes and woods sound wonderful too.

Not many people coming forward though - I hope there are more than two cycle/walk friendly places in the UK!

I can walk three miles to work along a properly surfaced canal towpath. It actually stretches at least 7 miles in one direction passing half a mile from the City Centre. In the other direction it goes out into the countryside (although it isn't such a good path that way).

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 09/02/2008 18:12

Oh sorry - this is in one of MN's most hated places. Stoke

You can also walk pretty much through the City from one side to the other on the [http://www.stoke.gov.uk/ccm/content/et/environment-team/greening-for-growth-folder/g4g-greenways.en Greenway]]

Durham city. Small enough to walk everywhere, lots of hills keep you fit so no need for the gym. I can walk to Waitrose without setting foot on tarmac until last 100 yards (but it is shutting soon). I only get in my car to go to teach two days a week in Hartlepool!

12 mins on train to Newcastle and every shop you could want.

City centre pedestrianised and toll road.

Makes me happy anyway.

I live in a cyclist friendly place 3 miles from a town, which I can cycle to safely on a cycle path( I don't drive and cycle to school and back and into town and down to here or to Findhorn beach... all the cycle paths are used by people walking too... it isn't perfect and woodland walks round here tend to be covered in dog shit, but at least I can go out on foot without being too terrified of cars etc.

Brighton & Hove is pretty good for cyclists

oxocube · 09/02/2008 19:03

Holland Walking and cycling is fab. Language is a PITA though!

Iota · 09/02/2008 19:05

I think Oxocube wins, but MK must be second

Denny185 · 09/02/2008 19:11

Friend live in Miltons Keynes and would second it the red ways are fab - basically run alongside all the road systems. Divided into foot users and wheeled users.

throckenholt · 09/02/2008 19:19

south Norfolk - lots of good foot paths and quiet lanes if you know which ones to go to - BUT also some god awful roads (unforunately some of the ones closest to us - so we tend to drive a few miles to go for a walk.

Elf · 11/02/2008 12:55

Thanks everyone, it is interesting to see what came up:

Milton Keynes
Barnt Green Worcs
North Norfolk
Kirklees, Yorkshire
Stoke
Durham
Findhorn
Cardiff
Brighton and Hove
Holland
South Norfolk.

Thanks for all the links too.

Let's hope organisations like Sustrans will keep working for us and that the government will one day put some oomph into the situation everywhere.

Stevenage has a great network of cycle lanes but is otherwise quite un-beautiful.
