How to pass on clothes/baby things to worthy cause??

I have read on Mnet about people passing on on clothes and baby/childres things to a womens' refuge which I thought was a great idea.
Does anyone know how would I go about this, since this sort of place wont obviously advertise itself?
I don't really want to give them to my local charity shop as they are already oversubscribed. Any other ideas?
Thanks

madamez - Crisis just look after single homeless people: Shelter is the one that looks after families so that might be a better bet. I few years ago I called an organisation called the Shafesbury Society and they came and collected clothes/toys to pass on to families in need.

Your local salvation army often works with local people in need - you could contact them.

Salvation Army is a good idea. My DP is a councillor and has local contacts needing things - from local churches doing outreach to a women's shelter. What we aren't keeping to maybe reuse goes that way. Maybe give your local councillor a call?

Books and toys are often wanted by places with waiting areas eg clinics

Why not sell the clothes at a car boot sale and donate the money to charity?

That way the clothes go where they are wanted and you can give to a charity of your choice. Second-hand clothes are often more acceptable to better-off families than to those in poverty.
