We’re putting in a garden room/shed office and want to put in an eco toilet. I’ve googled but getting really lost with all the options. I don’t understand the requirements for a soak away but don’t think we have space for one so looking for one that we have to empty out.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a not too expensive brand/type?

Thanks in advance!

Do you really need one? Pros of coming into the house:
•cost
•space
•not having one is most sustainable option.
Unless the garden room is massive and half a mile away from the house it’s hard to justify a loo in it.

What about a composting toilet? Or a therford porta potti?

Thanks but space not an issue and we really feel we need it to make most use of the room.

Happy to go with a composting one but I found it hard to narrow down brands and type. Will take a look at the Therford thanks.

I suspect connecting to your house waste water will be the most sustainable. Have you looked at that as an option? Where is the main sewer / waste pipe or your cess pit?

We have one - it came with our house and we'd love to get rid of it. Where are you based?

I've used a composting toilet on allotments. They are great for those spaces but they really really smell even when used perfectly. I would not want one in our garden room, we just come in to the house. It does limit use for occasional overnight guests but honestly, they won't want to stay in a stinky room.

If you have electricity out there I highly recommend a Separett composting toilet www.waterlesstoilets.co.uk/toilets/separett-villa-9010/?v=79cba1185463
They have a fan (which is why you need electrics) which sucks out all the smells and helps with the composting process so it literally does not smell at all. And the urine is separated which also helps, one of the main reasons composting toilets smell is the urine mixing with all of the solids! We have one out in our garden office as we couldn't get water out there. And then just bought some waterless soap and dispenser. Brilliant- so happy with it!

Thanks all. Lots to think about there...

I know this is an old post but I stumbled across it from Google as I am looking for the same thing, and was quite disheartened by the replies you got, so posting to help anyone else like me that stumbled across this.
Having a similar spec, and not wanting to pump waste up to the sewers which is costly, I found an Incinerating Toilet by a company called Cinderella. It allows around 4 uses an hour, no urine separation, and once you do your business you press a button and your waste is burnt. It costs around £2000 if you order from Spain though, a big downside.
Maybe not best solution but also an option for others.
