which I don't because of their takeover by L'Oreal, which has SUCH a terrible ethical score, where can you go?

If we are in a 'rich' phase I buy lovely organic cleansing cream, moisturiser etc but when we are not, which is now , I used to get the BS stuff.

Where do you go for reasonably priced, non parabens, sles, ie semi-natuarl stuff ? Thanks.

Our local farmers market sells ethical and organic food and moisturizer as well

FrayedKnot · 20/01/2008 21:19

I usually get my stuff from my local Health Food Shop, where they sell lots of beauty / cosmetic products, apart from food, prices vary, but some lines are reasonable.

I have also recently ordered some moisturizer from Spirit of Nature, and sometimes use Lush, but found their cleansers rather sticky and difficult to use. Moisturizer was good though.

I had some Body Shop stuff for Christmas which I am using up now and in comparison it smells so strong

Pannacotta · 20/01/2008 21:21

Lavera is a lovey brand, the shower gels are really gorgeous. Spirit of Nature sells the range.

TooTicky · 20/01/2008 21:31

Oh heck, sorry, the Dr Hadwen's shop has just closed

hunkermunker · 20/01/2008 21:57

I've been using the Halos and Horns children's range of bath and shower products - I can recommend the zingy orange hair and body wash and the melon shampoo and conditioner. No SLEs, parabens, etc. Was a bit about the shampoo, but my hair feels very soft today.

Tesco sell it, for not very much money at all.

As far as body moisturiser - I use Aveeno - everything else I've tried eventually I react to.

And face stuff - I have a moisturiser that I really like and I can't for the life of me remember what it's called. It's paraben-free, scented faintly with orange oil and I really like it. Not sure it's suitable for everyone's face - I have very dry skin. I'll see if I can find it online - I did once, I'm sure!

exbatt · 20/01/2008 22:00

I use a local health food shop. I particularly like the Lavera range. Not dirt cheap but not pricey like Neal's Yard. You can get Lavera online lots of places too.

Pannacotta · 20/01/2008 22:04

exbatt do you know of anywhere that sells LAvera on line which doesnt charge lots of p&P? I want to get a few bits and Spirit of NAture is £5 postage!

Rowlers · 20/01/2008 22:15

Weleda do nice stuff, especially their baby calendula oil range.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 20/01/2008 22:18

I hate, hate, hate the bloody body shop.

Not just for the L'oreal connection, but because the minute you walk into the shop, the assistants won't leave you alone.

"Have you seen this product? Let me tell you all about it. It's wonderful..."

"Do you need anything else? You know you use this over moisturiser, and we recommend... " blah blah blah

Problem is, their chamomile eye make up remover is the best that I have found, and reasonably priced.

Last time I bought some, the assistant asked me whether I needed any cotton wool FFS. I laughed in her face (and then felt really bad about it - not her fault).

But getting back to my point (I'm sure there was one...), what to do about my eye make up remover dilemma. Anyone know of a decent alternative?

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 20/01/2008 22:20

Oh, and (as I was reliably informed by one of the aforementioned irritating shop assistants) the chamomile is fairtrade & UK grown. Dammit.

mylovelymonster · 20/01/2008 22:22

www.greenpeople.co.uk - Baby wash, lotion, & baby balm all wonderful. Ranges for adults also great - I used to have excema - no more tho. Some of their things, particularly the baby stuff can be found in Waitrose, or health food/natural products stores.
I love Spirit of Nature generally tho, and get Bambo & Moltex nappies from here - wide range of stuff and free postage if you spend £60, if I remember right. (Easy to do with a sizeable nappy order for us).

TooTicky · 20/01/2008 23:32

Urtekram do beautiful shampoos. And toothpaste. And sun cream. They are a Danish company and their factory is completely powered by wind and hay.

TooTicky · 20/01/2008 23:35

I walked past a Body Shop t'other day and was incensed to see them banging on about fair trade ingredients and how they are helping third world children to get an education. The sheer hypocracy, what with their Nestle element

Pannacotta · 21/01/2008 10:13

TooTicky, thats good to hear about Utekram.
Liz Earle is another good name, good, natural ingredients, UK made. Packaging not great, I keep complaining to them but fab service.
Agree re the Body Shop, I worked there for a few months after graduating and it was the worst place I ever worked, poor pay, awful conditions, really dreadful generally. They threatened to sack me because I didnt smile enough (was cos I hated it so much)!!!

Elf · 21/01/2008 13:13

Thanks everyone, loads of really good ideas to follow up. Spoilt for choice in fact. Sometimes you get lovely stuff don't you but it's £30 a pot so hopefully some of this stuff really is reasonably priced. Thanks a lot.

That was the one, Utekram!

Now, everyone to the 'what to feed a vegan for lunch' thread :

Gemzooks · 12/02/2008 22:23

Weleda stuff is totally naturally, no nasty stuff. Not that expensive. in most health food shops...

mummypig · 13/02/2008 14:25

hi don't really have anything new to add to this thread as all my sources have been mentioned already! I get stuff online from Natural Collection or Spirit of Nature, or buy Green People things from our local healthfood shop. I really like their rosemary shampoo. It lasts for ages, like the concentrated Body Shop ones used to do before they went all commercial, and before I found out about SLS.

I sometimes buy things from Lush but find it works out pretty expensive and I'm not keen on the violet fragrance which seems to find its way into lots of stuff. I'd also prefer to buy vegan toiletries as although I'm not a vegan it annoys me how milk and honey find their way into loads of things unnecessarily. A friend used to use the Dr Hadwen Trust catalogue which I thought looked good, didn't realise they'd closed down now.
