If there were 4 people in our house and now there are only 2; how much will that affect the electric bill?

DD & her bf moved in for covid; they moved out a month ago

Our electric fixed rate ends in October, so I am trying to get a handle on our electric usage

Usefully (not) the smart meter was put in part way through the October which means the company have deleted all my previous meter readings

Do you think it might drop by 25% or might it be more like 33%?

It is going to depend on who uses it a lot and who doesn't surely ?

If I have a shower - the water is on for about 3 mins whilst I have a wash. If dd2 has a shower, it tends to be 20mins.
I might sit in a room and just MN on my laptop, but dd would have her laptop on plus be streaming something on another device and constantly having to be charging her phone, and her power pack.
She is much more likely to have a fan on, or a heater in Winter, whereas it takes extremes of weather for me to do either.
She is likely to leave lights and gadgets on when not using them whereas I don't.
She will put the oven on for one jacket potato, whereas I wouldn't.

So, it isn't a case of 4 people to two, it is a case of how much those 2 people use.

A lot of course - fridge, freezer, TV, etc will stay the same.

Interestingly - I just found our old bills online not the app) & gas is almost identical but electric was 54% in 2019 & 64% in 2018

So if I work on 65% of our current usage I wont be disappointed! Well not much

Now DH & I need to work on getting our Gas down!

Ours has gone up £60 a month since ds is home from uni, he only showers ,barely cooks but it seems like it all adds up.

KatyMac · 12/08/2022 10:16

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor what is that as a percentage of your bill? If you don't mind sharing

Well done, my maths is useless 🤣

KatyMac · 12/08/2022 12:00

So is mine it's a 50% increase on your old bill and is about a third of the new bill
