Alternative to washing up liquid (plastic bottles)

Can anyone suggest anything for me? Basically I buy washing up liquid in the weekly shop (maybe once a month!)

As I added it into my trolley earlier I just felt rage at buying something in a plastic bottle when my current plastic bottle could just be refilled.

i don’t have a local refill store. So what options do I have?

I don’t have a big budget unfortunately but if there’s anything I can do to make my own frugally - I bloody well will 😂

Does Milk & More cover your area?

upthem5 · 26/07/2022 13:55

Hey @Eleusa no they don't. They used to! :(

At one point when I too was feeling the rage, I used dettol soap bars to wash the dishes. It was the soap I had on the kitchen side for hand washing and I just tried it. It worked fine. The children hated it but then the children hate just about anything environmentally friendly like washable sanitary pads or shampoo bars....whole other thread really.

We have refills at our nearest market, and they also do door step refills on request. Small local company. It’s worth asking on your local Facebook group or having a Google to see if anyone small does it locally?

It is hard though, we sometimes feel it’s so much harder getting refills than just mindlessly buying throwaways. I can see why people struggle with it.

What about smol or something similar?

BlanketsBanned · 26/07/2022 14:10

Can you buy the recyclable plastic refill pouches instead

KnittingNeedles · 26/07/2022 14:12

Splosh. You buy one bottle and refill it. www.splosh.com/ Recommend the lime one.

upthem5 · 26/07/2022 14:13

What are the pouches made of?

I just checked Smol and they only do dishwasher tablets.

basically something in a powder that you can mix with water to make washing up liquid would be ideal! Did I just invent something? Probably not 😂

Thanks everyone!! X

If you shop about you should be able to get a code off your first Splosh order as a new customer. Alternatively you can use my code to get £3 off. HX2G1A0GSR

Someone on this board posted a code which I used for Who Gives a Crap paper and I was very grateful to them!

MerlinsButler · 26/07/2022 14:32

Ooh thanks for posting about Splosh - just what I've been looking for.

MerlinsButler · 26/07/2022 15:10

@KnittingNeedles are there any other products you would recommend from Splosh? I'm just looking at the washing powder and conditioner as well as the dishwasher tablets but wondering how good they are.

here is the answer.

Preparation and Usage

Fill to the line with warm tap water, pour in the powder and shake. Leave for 10-15 mins and you'll have a powerful eco washing-up liquid that's ready to use. You'll notice it fully thickens the next day. Some call it magic, we call it sense. Use 1-2 pumps directly onto a sponge or onto your pots and pans for sparkling results.

@MerlinsButler

I use Splosh for most of my cleaning products - kitchen cleaner, bathroom cleaner, toilet cleaner, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and handwash.

I like them because they actually work, unlike a lot of 'eco' cleaning products. I find the kitchen cleaner particularly good - better than most non-eco, and certainly better than the likes of Ecover's kitchen cleaner (which doesn't seem to do anything!).

The pouches instead of bottles reduces the plastic waste massively, and when you have a certain number of the empty pouches, you can send them back to Splosh who dissassemble them and recycle them into new products.

AnOldCynic · 02/10/2022 23:13

But there's still waste from the Splosh pouches?

I bulk buy 10 litres of eco friendly washing up from Biolindo.com. Easy to free cycle the 10 litre canister when empty.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 03/10/2022 11:17

You can send the pouches back to splosh for recycling/

Have you tried this? I bought this exact one and was really disappointed. It left everything greasy so I went back to Fairy 😞
