Which is fabulous of course, but no so fabulous when you cant make the chicken dinner youve planned!

frange?

3missys · 15/01/2008 13:49

Probably because of that jaime Oliver TV programme the other night! It won't last I suspect until they do there BOGOFF on there normal chickens or some other deal - people will go back to eating the cheapies.

Waitrose do a lovely one...

nortynamechanger · 15/01/2008 13:54

Waitrose had virtually empty FR/Org chicken shelves on Sunday - great for the chickens, not so great for our roast dinner.

MrsKitVonD · 15/01/2008 13:55

Well I was actully converted by thta programme, so I cnant say anything! BUT I know 100% i will never ever go back to cheap chicken. It makes me sick the thought of it!

Good in general, annoying personally I'm sure.

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:00

Freerange all the way I say ....Well done for converting! Don't forget the egss as well.

xtc · 15/01/2008 14:01

Free Range isn't that much better, go for organic.

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:03

Goes hand in hand in my book.

QuintessentialShadow · 15/01/2008 14:04

Whats the world coming to. There are no nintendos either. Neither ethical or free range ones, I cant even find preloved ones. And they dont flap their wings cheerfully either.

I think I am high on coffee.

MrsKitVonD · 15/01/2008 14:05

Missy we are getting our own chickies for free range eggs

CaptainUnderpants · 15/01/2008 14:07

So because there is a greater demand will the Supermarkets put the prices up ?

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:07

well done you - wish we had the room to have some. How many will you keep?

bundle · 15/01/2008 14:08

do you not have a butchers?

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:08

I hope not captain - they are dear enough as it is but you get what you pay for IMO.

OrmIrian · 15/01/2008 14:09

quintissential - I think you'll find the all Nintendos are free-range. DS#1 has managed to lose his 4 times since Christmas. I am thinking of battery-farming it.

muppetgirl · 15/01/2008 14:11

I couldn;t get one on Sat in Waitrose. I went to a butcher on the way to Ds's nursery. Lovely man who spoke to me in weights of chiken and I spoke to him in size of chicken -Med? I am so 'supermarketed' I don't have a clue what to ask for. I wanted a roast meal for 3 and enough for a curry afterwards. It cost £6.26. I was happy with that.

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:14

muppetgirl - can relate! I went into my butchers recently to ask for a few lamb chops but he said how many kgs? Anyway found out they do kangeroo and crocodile meat as well! not sure about that!

DaisyMoo · 15/01/2008 14:16

Where are all these cheap buttchers?! We have a lovely butcher's near to us, but it is just so expensive - more than double supermarket prices

We've got chickens, ducks and quails at the moment for the eggs and are planning to hatch some out for food plus our lovely pig named Waitorise is going to be slaughtered next week so we'll have a freezer full of lovely pork!

MrsKitVonD · 15/01/2008 14:21

We are getting 4 exbat hens and I want to get 2 chicks aswell in the future.

I get meat from tescos cause I dont drive so my mum takes me once a week shopping, she doesnt have time to take me to sepertae butchers, fishmongers , greengrocers ect, and i wouldnt ask her to after shes been at work all day, so i get what i need from there.

OP posts:
DaisyMoo · 15/01/2008 14:27

Waitorise? The pig is called Waitrose obv!

batterymum · 15/01/2008 14:30

my house went eggfree after dd was diagnosed with egg allergy

still do organic or freerange chickens for meat.

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:34

I buy from supermarkets to do the big shop for convenience but it is about what you buy from them that counts

I live near a lovely farmshop that has their own hens and a free petting farm - 2 potbelly pigs, donkeys and goats so the girls love going there as an outing and feeding the animals on a regular basis and I get to buy some food/drink as well while I am there.

3missys · 15/01/2008 14:35

@ MrsKit

MrsKitVonD · 15/01/2008 17:44

Just to let you know I walked into the village to my local butchers today and got a free range chicken for £5.99.

Also got all my veg & salad from local greengrocers too

HarrogateMum · 15/01/2008 17:47

I bought a chicken today at my butchers - £3 and he only does free range stuff - its not that big, and infact you do notice that they look more scrawny than the ones in the supermarket, but I guess the more exercise you get, the leaner you are!! I have just stuffed a load of ricotta and herbs under its skin and will be roasting it later (is there a drool emoticon?)
