Tesco's organic veg boxes

Am I the only one to have steam coming out of my ears when I see these in the shop? OK, perhaps I shouldn't shop at Tesco, but I just loathe these. I nearly put this in AIBU...

The box I looked at yesterday had a lemon from Italy in it, and mostly other overseas produce.

It's just so bandwagonny and still not doing it properly. I can't believe people buy them. Grrrr....

I used to have a veg box delivered from a scheme, but ended up composting half of it, as I never got round to using it, so cancelled it. I occassionally get the Tesco box with my groceries delivery, the veg are lovely, we eat them all, and while I normally only buy UK produce, the Tesco box never has flown-in goods, which are the real baddies, and there is a strong arguement to say spanish toms etc are greener, as not heating the greenhouse, as we have to in the UK, outweighs the carbon cost of transporting them.

RBH you are right of course the Soil Association accreditation is the gold standard for Organic and there are other lesser standards which apply and unfortunately also some scams. FWIW I would trust eggs from Waitrose above the other supermarkets (usually they tell you which farm the eggs came from) but the best option is to buy from a local supplier or farm shop where you can ask about where the eggs came from. And of course never buy imported. Also Martin Pitt eggs are quite widely available and have a very good reputation.

It's a scam. Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Just an excuse to charge you even more.

i shop at greengrocer for loose veg - imo veg boxes are a swizz they package any ole assortment not necessarily what you'd pick either.

What worries me about local shops is that they dont necessarily label where produce comes from, so you have to ask about each item (and trust the reply). Most greengrocers I know dont want a long chat with you about everything before you decide whether to buy or not (and are usually too busy anyway). A supermarket is clearly labelled, so I can spend as long as I want looking, thinking, planning, changing my mind, and if I want to walk out without buying anything, then thats fine.

Great. Now Tescos are trying to kill off the organic veg box schemes as well. And people will go for it.

TrinityRhinos - Coop are probably the most ethical supermarket. Although it's like shopping in the 1950s (Carbonates aisle anyone? LOL).
