i do actually put cardboard and vegetable peelings in our collected recycling bin. If you can be sure they didnt come into contact with meat our council says it is ok. however they have recently sent us a leaflet about composters,
anyone any experience?
there are some tht take food waste, but are they to be recommended.
what do you use?and we have very little space.

my local council gave out free composters - but they're about the size and shape of a dalek , and are not particularly small garden friendly. I did manage to find an unobtrusive corner for mine behind a bush, but I get drenched every time I try to get at the thing if it has been raining. So I've been gaily chucking fruit and veg peelings, teabags, eggshells etc into it. It is a bit whiffy when I take the lid of, but it fine otherwise, and I haven't had it long enough for its contents to turn into comppost yet.

You could probably use any container with a lid, the only difference the composter has is a 'door' at the bottom to get compost out.

you could just make one easily out of an old bin (plastic or metal) with some holes drilled in to the top and bottom... or just make a heap and cover it with some old carpet and maybe use some old bits of wood to make sides... basically anything that encloses it while still letting some air through

Look at the wigglywigglers website -- they have loads of different composters and wormeries and you should be able to figure out which is best for you.

I read that as "computer" and was thinking "what on earth does the size of her garden have to do with anything!"

i've used the subsidised by the council one and we have a little garden. It's fine but is mysteriously never more than a third full . I think if they're dirt cheap (think ours cost less than a tenner) then it's a good idea to take the offer up as a low-cost easy way to introduce yourself to composting and then you can gauge what you really need before you spend any proper cash.

We chuck all food waste bar meat/cooked scraps on it.
