How do you wrap your sandwiches for packed lunch?

I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in 'food' but since I want an ethical answer here goes....

DD's have packed lunch at nursery and I'm fed up with putting their sandwiches in foil every day (expense + environmental issues). Does anyone know of an alternative packing method?

Nursery are excellent and always return the foil for us to recycle but I'd rather just avoid it in the first place. The lunch boxes are refridgerated so need something that won't make the sandwiches soggy while they are cold stored.

I use waxed paper tied with raffia and a little bit of red wax....

We use this lunchbox jolly expensive to start with and a slight issue with fitting apples in but other than that its great. dds had it since september. Really easy to clean, showing no signs of wear, doesnt leak. It looks smart to the point that dds headteacher called her into his office to have a look at it when she started school!

oooh, just realised I've got a review for a future comp entry - hooray! (hope I can find a section to put it in)
bye!

oh bother - can't find a review section for 'handy lunch transportation'

We just use lock & lock type boxes. One child has a smaller box that holds his sandwiches nicely. This then goes inside a cool-bag with his fruit, drink and a small cake or piece o flapjack inside a smaller lock & lock box.

My older two have slightly bigger lock & lock boxes, the ones that come with 3 removable inner containers. I normally take 1 or 2 of the inner containers out, then I put the sandwich straight inside the box, and the fruit/cake or whatever inside the removable containers. The boxes then go straight into their school rucksacks.

Many of the children at our playgroup use a variety of plastic containers inside a lunch box. Even 3 and 4 year olds can manage to cope with their food inside plastic boxes and undo them theirselves.

I use greaseproof paper. I make the sandwiches about 7.45am and they get eaten about midday, so no problems. I use a generous amount and anchor the greaseproof paper with a bit of sellotape.

BTW, I'm loving those reusable wraps - what a great idea!

Shona - i bought two of your wraps last week, after seeing someone on here extoling their virtues and I have to say I'm really pleased with them. I did post on chat about them because I was so impressed.

Carmenere · 29/03/2008 23:20

when I was at school it was common to have your sandwiches wrapped in the waxed paper wrapper the bread came in.

expatinscotland · 29/03/2008 23:41

yeah but that was back in the dark ages when they sold bread in waxed paper, Carmen.

now it's sold in vile plastic bags .

Carmenere · 29/03/2008 23:55

the seventies weren't that long ago...............
