real nappy changes at night???

Hiya
My dd is finally sleeping through the night with no dream feed . My local council real nappy advisors tell me that I should change her nappy in the night still. They suggested changing it after 2 hours while she was in a deep sleep.

Well - she screamed blue murder when we got her up to change her. Does anyone else do this night time change, or do you just stuff in as many boosters as you can?

Love to know your wisdom on this.

Thanks
greenwich

hi there. dd is 7 months and in real nappies. i never change er n teh night now - she never poos but does wee a heck of laot. i put her in either a Motherease with boosters or a kooshie with micrfibre boosters. i do slap on plenty of barrier cream.

never had any problems with leaking overnight and TBH - she seesm to do fine til the morning.

I just use a fully fleece lined one eg a Bumble and boost her to the max

Local Council Nappy advisors advice sounds a bit cruel to me. Never heard that advice before.

Anyway, not all babies have the same sleep pattern so how do they know yours will be in deep sleep after two hours? If you do follow their advice surely she is going to be in the next nappy for hours to come (if you're lucky).

I think if this was what you were supposed to do then many of us would have heard of it before. Remembering disposables are still a relatively new thing, I don't recall anyone ever talking about how it was routine to wake up a sleeping baby to change it's nappy and how that all changed when diposables came on the scene.

Been using cloth for 18 months now and never done this myself. I use Ellas House Bumhuggers - the newer style has a pocket you can boost as neccessary with hemp, microfibre or whatever. I only use these at night, I have three and that allows me to air dry them in time. If you use pocket nappies, you can't get better than a folded bamboo terry square, lovely and soft for nighttime. Other people use Minki Huggles for night time, or little lamb bamboo nappies. If your DD is fine as she is why change? As she gets older, you may find you need to use a specific night nappy (I got away with a boosted fluffle until my DD was 10 months)

Ds2 has been in real nappies since 10 days (now nearly a year). When he was tiny I did change his nappy at night - either because of a massive wee or a poo. I've never changed it for the sake of it and tbh cannot remember the last time I changed it at night. I don't think he's suffered for it. I use a fleece liner to help his skin but that's as far as I go.

ib · 08/12/2007 20:41

Another here who doesn't change at night - fleece liner and lots of boosters.

greenwitch · 08/12/2007 20:45

oh brilliant, so happy to hear this. brilliant news. we'd given up anyway, but I was feeling a little guilty. We use prefolds and a booster and a fleece liner. So should be a-ok. Think I might check out the pocket nappies next time I buy some more wraps.
Big smiles here, and it's not just the vino.

we just used a bigger size in kooshies
she toilet trained herself at 21mo so we are sorted now!

amytheearwaxbanisher · 08/12/2007 20:55

unless your dd is a very heavy wetter and likly to go through the nappy wetting cot and all i would definatly leave her to it why disturb the poor thing

bagpuss · 08/12/2007 20:57

greenwitch, you should have a look at minki pockets if they are for nights. They are very waterproof and you can stick more than one prefold in if you need to. They are very bulky though but do last a long time.

Change them when asleep? What are they mad?! Boost her to high heaven and leave her to it, afterall if she poos or gets soggy enough that it bothers her she will let you know.

Anyway, what difference do they thing changing her 2 hours after she has gone to bed is going to make? Do you have to change every 2 hours overnight or is 10 hours ok but 12 not?

greenwitch · 08/12/2007 21:07

i think the idea was that they don't wee when at night except for just after last feed, hence the 2 hour wait... does that make sense?

Ah ok, suppose so. Still a bit though, not convinced ds' bladder works like that he is 11 months now but at around 5/6 months he could soak a terry with a pad folded terry as a booster, didn't leak though and he would spend 13 hours in it!

gigglewitchyouamerrychristmas · 08/12/2007 21:11

haven't changed any of my 3 dc at night except for the odd time i know they have had excessive quantities of milk, and we haven't had any probs

Indith · 08/12/2007 21:12

sorry, forgot the rest of the sentence there he is 11 months and therefore consumes rather less liquid than before.

FourPlusOne · 08/12/2007 21:48

DD has become a really heavy wetter at night and outwets the minky stuffable that I used to use on her during the night (even when boosted loads). It's a shame as that is a really nice night time nappy. I now have to put 2 nappies on her and line them with fleece liner. Then I put a larger wrap on top! Poor thing is really bulky aroung the bum at bedtime but I would rather do this than wake her to change her and she doesn't mind at all. It's not as if she needs to walk in the night anyway! I would only change in the night if I walked into the room and could tell that she'd done a poo!

katwith3wisemen · 08/12/2007 21:51

No, would never change either

unless could smell a poo.

coby · 08/12/2007 21:55

Fourplusone - what are you stuffing your minki with? (is it just me or does that sound very rude )

LazyLinePainterJane · 08/12/2007 22:09

Changing at night? Nah, fuck that for a larf!

gigglewitchyouamerrychristmas · 08/12/2007 22:09

coby

perhaps we just have rude minds

Jennster · 08/12/2007 22:13

Nope don't change ds. Poor dd, I used to change her disposable and only put her in night reusables 6 months ago. Why oh why oh why? Just couldn't do the leap of faith. Stupid I know.

coby · 08/12/2007 22:14

gigglewitch - I blame my pregnancy hormones for mine (in fact, I blame them for everything right now )

gigglewitchyouamerrychristmas · 08/12/2007 22:22

ummm... i dont think i have an excuse

NineBabiesDancing · 08/12/2007 22:48

I understood that many (most ?) babies don't wee in deep sleep. Certainly this was always true for my DD. She sleeps in a backup cloth nappy at night. Assuming I get up straight away, her nappy is always dry.

If you wanted to check this was the case for your DD, set the alarm extra early one morning and check her nappy straight away.

If she is only weeing first thing in the morning, there is no point in changing her over night.
