I have today, run out of plastic bags! That means, I have finally remembered to take my re-usable bags out with me everytime and have also remembered to say to the person on the till, 'I'll use my own bag, thankyou!'

I'm very proud of myself, every little helps!

good for you

get ready for:

"I don't need a bag, thankyou."

response 1) "are you sure?"
response 2) ignores you and packs in a bag anyway

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 05/12/2007 20:16

Oh, I've been dying for someone to say that! I'm a bolshy cow and would love to tell them exactly why I don't want a bag!

Well done!
I keep forgetting. Last time I put the bags in the car .. and left them there. Bought two reusables at the till to salve my guilt a little.

I do remember them more in non-supermarkets. I was quite impressed in Hobbycraft when the young man on the till evidently noticed I had a bag and asked if I wanted a carrier. Good lad.

lol

sometimes i go to the shop at the end of my road with my buggy. i buy 2 pints of milk and every single bloody time* the bloke puts my milk in a bag, right after i have said to him "no bag please!".

i just take it out the bag and put it on my buggy. it's so silly. i go there about 3 times a week

mustrunmorewantsanewname · 05/12/2007 20:22

Mine are in the buggy, so on the rare occasion I get to go shopping without the boys, I always forget the bags We do do bagless delivery from Tescos though (bit of a pain with 2 littlies 'helping').

I'm quite used to my pleas of 'no bag thanks' being ignored, as alot of things I put loose in the buggy basket, and the till person fills a bag while I'm bending down arranging

LadySnowsAlot · 05/12/2007 20:27

they do that don't they?! i don't like the way they look at me when i unpack the bag and load everything on my bugsy malone either...

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 05/12/2007 20:30

I've got the Wilkinsons fold up bags, which have long handles, so its a bit easier to remember to take it out. I've started using a little handbag, which I just leave in one of the bags, so I have to pick it up to find my handbag before I walk out the door.

Well Done!

I was in Ireland recently and they have a great system. If you are in the Supermarket and need a bag you have to pay for them (the same as when I lived in Germany 10 years ago!) and Clothes Shops etc give you lovely Paper bags that you can reuse/recycle. Even my 75 year old MIL can get the hang of it so why can't most of the UK?

I just gave away the under the sink carrier bag bin I have had for years as I never have enough bags anymore. It is so refreshing not to open a cupboard and have a flurry of plastic bags to chase

Minum · 05/12/2007 20:38

Have been doing the no bag thing for a year or so now, and havent had any shopkeeper give me a funny look, or put things in a bag regardless, so I think the message is getting through. My favourite bag was my lovely red string bag, which I kept in my handbag, but I've lost it .

oregonianabroad · 05/12/2007 20:42

This was my new year's resolution last year, and (sigh), i have failed miserably.

Will do better.

ballbaby · 05/12/2007 20:43

I use my Next carrier bags for my grocery shopping - they fold up nicely in the big front pockets of my handbag. It's shocking when you get in the habit of re-using but you look around you at the checkout and see thousands of one-use plastic bags flying around. Well done you lot for making the effort!

perpetualworrier · 05/12/2007 20:47

I'm no where near as good as you lot, but am trying, much to the dismay of my Tesco's delivery man.

Everytime he brings me my bagless delivery, he explains how much easier it is to unload with bags and that it doesn't matter as he can always take them back to recycle next week.

It wouldn't be easier for me. Doesn't make any differnce if I have to take them out of the bags or the crates and if he doesn't like standing on the doorstep like a lemon he could always help
