Compostable tea bag recommendation please

Standard builders tea. Must be a bag, not lose tea.
And preferably easily available.
Any suggestions for things that can go in my compost bin?

PG Tips tea bags are biodegradable and can go in your food waste bin. I’m not sure whether a domestic compost bin would be able to cope though.

This article from April suggests that PG tips are your best bet of the major brands.

We use PG Tips and put them in our standard composter. They do break down mostly and any bits will disappear in the soil by my reckoning

Any suggestions for things that can go in my compost bin?
No proteins and nothing cooked, no chilli seeds (bad for the brandling worms) and I've also heard you should avoid citrus peel, although I do put it in.
Egg shells take longer to compost, so the more you crush them the better; similarly with avocado skins (and the stones even more so).
Because kitchen waste tends to be soggy, I add in cardboard, eg toilet rolls, egg cartons. I line the compost bucket with cardboard, so that goes in too.
Grass cuttings heat the heap beautifully, but you also need some dryer, chunkier, twiggy stuff to keep it aerated.
Re tea bags the only one I found didn't compost were Tea Pigs. The others do, and I guess the plastic content you're referring to is in the glue seal?
I love composting! Blush

Can you get Lyons (Irish brand) tea in Britain?

WorriedWishingWell · 06/07/2021 08:40

I tend not to put fallen tree leaves in, other than a few that get scooped up when I'm weeding etc. The advice is to put leaves in a separate wire bin to make leaf mulch. I don't do that but I spread the leaves across the beds in autumn, by spring they've rotted down and provided the worms with something to munch on.

WorriedWishingWell · 06/07/2021 08:42

I do get a lot of fruit flies in my compost, so sometimes I take the lid off for a few hours and give the birds a chance to eat them.

GlitterBiscuits · 06/07/2021 09:01

We don't have any food waste collection.
I have been composting for a long while but avoid putting tea bags in.
I hate tea so I don't give it any thought. But recently made tea for some workmen and used up loads of tea bags over a few days.
It seemed very wasteful

Sorry OP I had misinterpreted your final question as going beyond the tea bag query.

MistyFrequencies · 06/07/2021 09:30

I put all of ours (buy whatever brand is on special..) in our compost. Seems fine so far....

AllisoninWunderland · 11/08/2021 19:52

@GlitterBiscuits I compost Clipper Everyday organic tea bags. They are unbleached and don’t contain plastics or glue like most do.
Oh and it’s the yummiest tea in the world!

Miarara · 11/08/2021 20:58

Another vote for clipper they're organic, plastic free and unbleached.

MMAMPWGHAP · 11/08/2021 21:01

Good tip: Clipper much cheaper in large boxes from Amazon. Comes in smaller foil packs in the big box.

321zyx · 11/08/2021 21:01

Clipper plastic free tea bags

Was looking for stronger tea as even Yorkshire Tea doesn't seem great now. To my surprise and delight Ifound Sainsburys Extra Strong RedLabel tea bags. Am assuming they will roll this out to their other tea products but this was the only one lin the local shop.
Rainforest Alliance and lots of writing all over the packet about the bags 'pop it in your food waste bin ready to compost'.
But no more details, so hope it doesn't have hidden plastic. No string and I also like no inner foil packet, no cellophane outside so should be totally recyclable/compostable.

Early days, so will have to see how they breakdown. Beware this really is builders tea though! But great to have own brand, others are v expensive

theneverendinglaundry · 17/10/2021 14:12

Barry's Tea are compostable as of September this year. Lovely strong Irish tea bags.

BambooWhoosh · 24/10/2021 09:41

AllisoninWunderland @Miarara* @321zyx @MMAMPWGHAP
Do you know if the foil inner on Clipper is recyclable please? I'm wondering if it is some foil/plastic hybrid. Can't see the info on the box or website.

MMAMPWGHAP · 24/10/2021 10:42

I think it’s a foil/plastic hybrid.

BambooWhoosh · 24/10/2021 11:42

Thanks!

DuringDinnerMints · 13/11/2021 20:56

We use Yorkshire and just tear the bag open before putting it in the compost.

didireallysaythat · 18/12/2021 19:30

Brewtea? I use their loose leaf but they have teabags too

GuyFawkesDay · 18/12/2021 19:36

Yorkshire are now compostable.

Second Barry's. My absolute favourite

Cookerhood · 18/12/2021 19:39

There's a difference between being able to compost them in your own compost bin & putting them out with food waste for collection as the food waste is composted at higher temperatures, that's why they sometimes say that on the pack.
