old crockery - what do you do with it?

We have some old plates, bowls etc, not chipped but not in sufficient numbers of one design either, so couldn't go to charity shops. Any ideas what to do with it apart from the rubbish bin? Thanks.

Break them and put them at the bottom of plant pots for drainage. Or just keep using them for that bohemian-shabby-chic look.

freecycle them.

or put a note up in a supermarket or on a university campus - a student starting out in their first flat might want them.

charity shops won't mind that they don't match you know. I prefer mis-matched crocks myself, and dh's love of sets is probably one of his most annoying traits. hey ho.

Got a local Polish/E European store?
Put a note up - manu of these folk would be thrilled to have them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I gave up on freecycle as people didn't always turn up (for more worthy items). I'll ask the cleaner if she needs them. We are too far from a Uni or a soup kitchen type of place, the drive wouldn't be worth it for a few bits & pieces. They sometimes ask for ceramics at DS's school for art projects but I'm in a cleaning & de-cluttering mood and don't want to keep them until then. Thanks again. I'll be using the mugs for Xmas presents (filled with chocolates).

some fetes have a smash the crockery stall, perhaps an organisation like that would take them off your hands?

but charity shops are always full ofodd bits of crockery. some people like them ........

moonstruck · 12/11/2007 13:08

Smash them up, get some concrete and make a rustic looking pathway to your front door

CristinaTheAstonishing · 12/11/2007 17:58

That's v creative, Moonstruck, but i'm in a block of flats

keep it in the cupbard? All our crockery is old and none matches. I reckon that makes us look bohemian trendy
I do in my secert heart sometimes yearn for stuff that matches like you see in magazines, but its would be unethical to buy a set when I don't need it. There's 6 of us. We have 10 plates, lots of little plates, about 12 mugs, 4 bowls etc. So plenty for everyone (as long as they don't all want soup). No excuses to buy more 'stuff'. But sometimes I'd like matching things. No idea why cos I grew up without matching stuff too.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/11/2007 20:23

The mix & match look doesn't bother me, i just want the cupboards tidy and as clutter-free as possible. Next in line is the linen cupboard, then the bookshelves.

You nesting?

CristinaTheAstonishing · 20/11/2007 19:40

LOL, no, just fed up with the clutter. DD2 is 8 weeks old, definitely no more nesting in this house
