Off Grid living

Been reading this book and how the authors travels about meeting off-gridders. But it crossed my mind that 60 million people in the UK can't all move to remote valleys or buy a woodland or even own a big enough allotment to grow all their veg.
I wanted to live on a canal boat but dd came along with severe brain damage. Wheelchair + canal boat we could probably do but she requires endless emergency hospital stuff so we have to stay put in a house with phone and leccy.
Anyone else interested in this?

Me!

Before dd came along I lived in a wood for a year in a half underground house we (me and an ex) built ourselves, I have lots of friends who are off-grid in various ways. I'm planning to take dd travelling next spring, and will be looking for a sustainable community for us to settle in. Will post further when the teatime/bedtime madness is all over.

Was wondering about being off grid in a house. Leccy I could live without (not sure about phone/computer) but we'd like to use a turbine to generate our own when they become practical. Water seems an issue everywhere.
We have open fires to heat the house.
Still wish I could go for a canal boat but DH says no
