SIGG bottles... safety re: drinking/milk bottles for toddlers please?

hello, I'm looking for a new bottle for my toddler and want to avoid the nasty chemical releasing plastic ones widely available. I spotted SIGG bottles on-line. Anyone use them and recommend them? I was amazed they are made of aluminium as it seems to have been the general consensus for a long time that aluminium isn't good for anyone. I'm confused on this one...

Well, you got me wondering as I've been using adult and child versions for years. According to their website "the bottle interior is sprayed with a taste-inert, food-compatible stove enamel which is then baked-on" (the outside is also coated).

I use them for water and juice for my two DS's. I first spotted them when I was living in Germany where they are very popular. Germans 'test' everything very very thoroughly and report very widely so I wouldn't think that any doubts about them have ever been found.

Hi HHH, it did strike me as an unusal material to use... my lo is using bottles for milk (by a company called SweetDreamz... though think they have recently changed names) Now though he really prefers sippy type cups but all the ones I can see seem to be made of normal plastic so thought I'd try something else. You are spot on AussieSim. If anyone is going to test things thoroughly it's Germans so that is hugely reassuring. Are they easy for kids of 18 months to drink from? Sorry this sounds a daft question but my DS can be a bit daft when faced with a new cup!
Even though they are pricey they seem a really good idea and my son will love all the little pictures they have on the. Dinosaurs particualry! Thanks for your thoughts and help.

It's not a good idea to use them for milk as they get mouldy realy quickly and are hard to clean IME.

They are great for water. I don't even use them for juice.

To clean them, you can buy special disinfectant tablets. If you just use them for water, you don't really need these tablets very often.

They are good bottles because they don't leak.

www.greenbaby.co.uk/pl_FEEDING.htm Greenbaby have pvc free toddler beakers and also glass bottles, dd's glass one smashed after it had been thrown too many times!

I had glass ones when the DS's were small babies. Not so practical for a toddler though.

We use Sigg and have for a long time. However, we only put water in them. We do not use anything special to clean them - just in the hot tap with washing up liquid (ecover of course!) We love them. Though be warned, if you drop them from hight on conrete, they will dent (found through experience!) and you can't put them in the freezer with water in or they split (also found through experience!).

We also only use ours for water. Milk traces could get stuck in the valve and go off.

can you wash the lids or bottles in the dishwasher does anyone know?

crazycanuck · 04/07/2008 14:35

I wash the lids in the dishwasher but not the bottles. I recall hearing that the bottles aren't dishwasher safe.
