yeah, it would save me a fortune!

bobsmum · 07/11/2007 16:47

I would happily, but the nearest bus stop is a 6 mile walk and the nearest train station is 20 miles or so, so not really possible for us!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 07/11/2007 16:47

oh gosh - tell me about it - £260 HP agreement (which we're tied into until next year), Insurance, Tax etc etc.....thankfully DH gets his petrol expenses paid for by work (when they can be ar*ed sorting it out - but he pays for it initially ) but still costs a fortune.

we only have one car, 2 would be too expensive
would be very hard to give it up because both our families live 3 and 6 hours away respectively and would be a nightmare on the train, too many changes, too much luggage with 2 under five

claricebeansmum · 07/11/2007 16:47

Yes.
Try very hard not to use the car - DH cycles 17 miles into work each day, walk DS to school and DD gets school bus but tonight both have after school activities that finish late and are at school miles apart - car is the only option. Do lift share for DD most of week.

I would love to be car free, but with 1 bus an hour if we are lucky, and soon to be 3 kids under 4, it just isnt practical.

Also, in Ipswich now - it would cost £6.80 return on the bus to town for me and DH. We can take the car and park for over 5 hours for that (not that we are ever in town that long)

I do hate the fact the car swallows money in the form of petrol/tax/insurance etc but we would spend so much more on buses!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 07/11/2007 16:52

Our problem is that DH needs his car for work. It's virtually the only time it gets used. And I only go in it a handful of times a year LOL.

I would love to be car free but we live in the middle of nowhere so it's not possible. In fact we are a 2-car family, as DH needs a car to get to work too, but he has promised me we will switch to bio-diesel (made from old chipfat) when the guarantee expires in 18 months. Looked into converting my own much smaller car to run on LPG but would have been cheaper to buy a new car.

We moved into a city so we could be car free.
I don't think kids is a valid excuse for not being car free. I have 4, one of whom is in a wheelchair and use buses/trains etc with and without luggage.
Sure its harder than chucking it in the car, sure the kids whinge sometimes but whats more important?
Jarm - have you ever sat down and actually worked out insurance/tax/depreciation/petrol etc agaisnt number of times tou'd get on a bus/cost of buses? Cars usually work out more expensive. Then there's hidden costs like the taxes we have to pay for endless roads, health care, pollution, oil wars etc
There's a car-free list on Yahoofor those who'd like to be carfree or who are with ideas, solutions and answers for common excuses. It is mainly American thoough.

60 mile round trip to work, plus no public transport there anyway. Not an option for me to give up my car unless I find another job closer to where I live.
Dh has company car but works 50 miles in the completely opposite direction to me!
Due to start maternity leave and am planning to use the car much less, walk more and maybe use the bus as well.

Your petrol bill must be huge!
