Who gets their electricity from a green energy supplier? If not, why not

I was interested to read in yesterday's Guardian about how low the take up of green electricity supplies has been:

www.guardian.co.uk/money/2007/nov/03/householdbills.renewableenergy

Just wondering how many of you ethical mumsnetters have switched.

We get ours from Ebico.

They are green-ish but also are non-profit making and do not charge a premium for prepayment meters.

needmorecoffee · 07/11/2007 16:23

We switched to Ecotricity. They claim to use all money to fund more windfarms.

Lizzylou · 07/11/2007 16:27

We do, I think it is from Scottish Power, but not sure.

sophy · 07/11/2007 19:36

We get ours from Good Energy, it is 100% renewable according to the website. Any others?

I want to switch but I need hard facts about cost etc. Where can I find those?

sophy · 07/11/2007 19:43

Sorry I can't do links, but the Guardian story I referred to in the OP has some useful suggestions, websites etc. It costs nothing to switch and only takes a few minutes if you do it online, and you do need to send in a meter reading. You can shop around for the best Green tariff just as you can with normal energy providers.

We are with Southern Electric on a green tariff. Supposed to be 100% renewable and they make an annual donation to the RSPB.

Switched about 5 years ago!

TheBlonde · 07/11/2007 20:06

Ours offers some kind of green tariff but we are on the one where they donate to the BHF instead

I would except i am not sure how green they all are

Some seem to buy green credits off other companies, some seem to have very odd ideas about being green

I just get frustrated & angry about it all

needmorecoffee · 07/11/2007 20:11

The Ecologist always recommends Ecotrcitiy, as did 'Ethical Consumer'. So I went with them.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 07/11/2007 20:14

We don't - as having looked into it it was going to cost us more than we could ever hope to reasonably afford - it's bad enough on the one we're on at the moment which costs us around £90 a month for gas and electricity (averaged out throughout the year that is)

ballbaby · 07/11/2007 20:19

I also use Good Energy. They have been described as one of the best by this National Consumer Council report. Our monthly direct debit has actually gone down since we signed up with them.

allmytimeonmumsnet · 09/11/2007 10:18

We are with ecotricity although I almost switched to another green one a while ago as the guarenteed to match your local supplier. There was a really good freinds of the earth page on this - will see if I can find it

Afraid I am still not with an ethical bank though as this was another thing the guardian article raised. Did try Co-op for my business bank ages ago but had loads of trouble as had to do it all by post as no branches around here. Would really like to switch but there is a lot to be said for a friendly local branch.

busybusymummy · 09/11/2007 17:27

We put it into USwitch and would cost us an extra £500 a year (estimate) - we couldn't afford that, and unsure about some of the dubiolus claims the companies are making. I felt could make more of a difference by reducing my energy consumption and investing £2 in tumble dryer balls, water buoys for the toilet, energy light bulbs etc....

escondida · 10/11/2007 13:41

£700 a year difference, Doodles?! What are you spending now?
We have a large house, we are with Good Energy, and we spend £5/wk on lekki (including the cooker, I cook almost every night, heating is oil).
I could take more showers and wash the bedding more often (only fortnightly atm)... but even if we doubled our electricity use we'd still be under £600/yr. Don't even have that many energy saving bulbs.

ballbaby · 21/11/2007 19:18

I agree I'm shocked that a comparison site said it would cost an extra £500 a year. I also switched to Good Energy expecting it to be about 10% more expensive - in reality because we are so much more energy conscious these days our bills have gone down. EVERYONE SHOULD DO IT!!!

Good Energy give their tariff here which makes it easy to estimate if it will cost you more.
