This makes me SO cross (major rant)

I have a sandwich toaster

I sandwiched the lead

It died

I took it to be mended

They won't - it's not cost effective

Well if I want to pay £10 to get it mended who are they to say it's not cost effective

All it needs is the cable cutting, the back taken off, the old bit of cable removed & the new end attached.

If it was at the other end I would do it as it would just be changing a plug, but as it's the inside of the machine I thought it would be better for someone trained to do.

It will only take about 10 minutes

How is this going to help the planet

Reduce, REUSE, Recycle FGS

Sorry rant over

our toaster broke and our local lovely electrician was not able to replace it, because it had been deliberately designed so that it could not be unscrewed at the back

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:07

The back is unscrewable, that's the annoying thing

So its just a bit of the flex in the middle Katy, that needs removing and rejoining? Do you have a helpful electrician friend that could do it for you?

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:14

Hmm I thought it would be safer to cut the end off & reconnect to the sandwich toaster, but I could put a joint in I guess

Well, DH is an electrician and tbh, thats all he'd do. You've only got to rejoin colour to colour inside and put some insulating tape around it.

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:20

I def couldn't do that MML - I have staff who use it.......OFSTED/Risk Assessment/Nightmare (remember)

But I thought if I got it repaired & it all looked fab I could carry on using it

God, they get everywhere don't they? Shame you're not nearer, DH could have it sorted to whatever national standards Ofsted and Electrician require, within minutes!

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:27

I know

& just cos I don't know the right man (or live in the right area) I have to add it to the landfill pile grrr

Could you see if there a a FE collage that could fix it for you as part of the electrical/ electricians course?

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:31

Good idea

i could probably do it myself

It's only like wiring a plug

Maureen ask you DH if he would talk me through it?

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 03/11/2007 12:32

Thats a good idea MB! There must be someone who'd fix it.

MaureenMLove · 03/11/2007 12:36

Bad news! I was wrong to assume I know anything about electrics at all! Just spoken to DH who said, it would work, but since its a sandwich toaster, so it gets hot and greasy, the tape will eventually loose its stick and you'll be back to square one again. Sorry to get your hopes up!

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:37

Maureen ask if he will talk me through doing it properly?

OP posts:
callmeovercautious · 03/11/2007 12:45

Perhaps put it on Freecycle as a repair project. At least you know someone else is going to reuse it if not you.

MaureenMLove · 03/11/2007 12:46

Right, open the back up and cut the old flex out, leaving a bit still attached, so they know which colour goes where when you put the new one on. He said, you'll probably need 3 core flex, but it needs to be the same thickness as the one you're taking out, so take the old flex with you and just ask the man in the shop.

Then you just simply have to unscrew the little bit of flex that you've left in and replace it with the new one. He said it should be pretty straight forward!

You what I'd do? I'd play the silly little lady card and take the whole thing with me, with the back taken off and flutter my eyelashes until they did it for me! I know I could get away with that in my B&Q's!

Katymac · 03/11/2007 12:53

The one I have is about 4 ft long - it would still be 2/3ft long after I cut that bit off - can I still use it?

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 03/11/2007 13:02

Yep, thats absolutely fine!

Katymac · 03/11/2007 13:03

I love your DH

I am off for a little nap (very busy week & I'm on 2nd lot of A/B)

So i will try later

Thanks you (I'll let you know how I do)

OP posts:
Katymac · 03/11/2007 22:53

i CAN'T FIX IT

Some sort of silly soldering joint for each wire - which (obviously) I can't do

OP posts:
themoon66 · 03/11/2007 22:59

Oh just bin it. It's not worth raising bloody pressure over. I have got cross over unfixable things too.... washer, dishwasher, irons (four of em) laptop, mobile phone, kettles ( 2 of em) etc.
