I've just repaired 40 moth holes in a jumper.

I have a few good quality merino wool jumpers, and a gorgeous wool shawl that got very moth eaten a few years back when I lived in London.

Discovered this amazing way to repair jumpers using old felting technique. It really is ridiculously easy. I chose a contrasting colour repair but you can colour match as well. The wool fluff I was supplied will do many many repairs as you only use a wee bit.

Sharing here as I don't know why we all aren't doing this.

I ordered this kit from Netherlands but there must be people doing this style of repair in uk? Is it a lost art? You need the carded wool, bit of firm foam and felting needle.

that looks great
do they send you many different colours?

I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than pfaff around repairing jumpers but that’s just me. No patience.

Spudlet · 29/10/2020 09:05

Ooh, I’ve never seen this before, but I love it! Definitely keeping it in mind for any jumper disasters that might occur. Would it work on a mixed fibre though, or does it have to be 100% wool?

sorryforswearing · 29/10/2020 09:05

And I don’t like the finished result.

hoxt · 29/10/2020 09:07

Is it easy? I have zero patience! But lots of lovely cashmere with the odd hole. How long did it take to do 40 holes?

Purplewithred · 29/10/2020 09:12

Me too - I have a beloved cashmere dress that I desperately want to repair,. Is it easy? Can you put an ‘after’ picture of your jumper?

It's ridiculously easy. I did the 40 hole jumper watching a couple of tv shows last night.

All the stabbing is very satisfying

Sorry OP I think the finished result looks ugly and it looks time consuming! I'm not a fan of that felted look in general.

I prefer invisible mending using the same colour and thread.

I'm not sure. It worked on a possum/merino blend. Not sure it will work on artificial fibres.

I’ve ordered! Thank you.

Ooh. Any idea how this standa up to washing machines/ tumble dryers?

TheClitterati · 29/10/2020 09:22

They do different packs with different colours. You can colour match or contrast.

You can do it wrong side or right side. If you repaired a black jumper, on the wrong side, with black, the repair would be pretty invisible.

I went nuts with contrasting colours on the 40 wee holes. I won't be wearing it to the office but will absolutely wear at home, outdoors, post swimming etc.

They say it's a permanent repair. It creates a new "fabric" that attaches itself to the existing fabric.

I don't use tumble dryers but I would never put woolen clothing into a dryer.

Also wondering how it stands up in the washing machine

Yay! What colours did you choose?

I got orange yellow maroon blue grey. But I'll be keeping an eye out for more carded unspun wool (not sure of proper name) in shops here.

I'd also love to see a picture of the contrasting colours - I'm intrigued!

TheClitterati · 29/10/2020 09:52

The jumper looks a bit bonkers but was virtually shredded by moths.

The purple shawl is a lot darker than it looks in the pic

Close up so you can see how it becomes part of the fabric. Each hole takes a matter of minutes to repair.

I've done this but years ago - perfectly possible to use same colour thread if you can find a wool that is the same colour and quality. It involves visiting lots of wool shops and picking one or more possible colours and then shredding and mixing them to match the hole as near as possible.

The problem nowadays is there are so few wool shops about, and many don't have 100% wool but synthetics.

It all looks very neat but have you tried to tackle your moth problem?

StillWeRise · 29/10/2020 10:01

I like the grey jumper OP
