I mentioned to the headteacher today an idea about recycling and she looked at me gone out basically ,then said she would speak to the goverors about it.

Basically I was wondering if there could be a recycling station in the school grounds I'm sure this would have benefits as we live in quite a poor area and lots of people dont have their own transport some benefits I can think of are

teaching children the importance of recycling

parents could take the stuff on the way to school therefore taking away the need for an extra car journey or any car journey at all.

A certificate or small prize for the chilren who do the most recycling each term.

I could really see this working and I find it hard to recycle as there is no where near us but if it was in the school grounds it would be so easy ,I'm also sure this would be easy enough to work in most primary schools what do you think, good idea or non starter??

Sounds like a great idea. I do worry sometimes that recycling stations can be a target for vandals / arsonists, and that perhaps that wouldn't be a good thing to have near a school, but apart from that it sounds great.

Thanks the good thing with our schools regarding vandals is that it's completley secure at night ,but I can see it been an issue with other schools

Sounds good - how would you get the stuff from school to the recycling depot?

pyjamagirlgotbitbyvampires · 12/10/2007 20:14

Well ,the schools could work together with the councils and they could pick it up ,or most schools have a school van this could be used say once a month to go along to the recycling place and it could also incorporate an educational trip for a small group of children each time

We have a schools environmental officer at our council, who is working with all schools in the borough to bring in recycling, energy awareness, etc We have a schools eco fair, a few times a year to share ideas, and make sure everyone knows what is going on - check with your council if they have similar intiatives.

There are lots of school eco awards given by councils and education bodies, which are a good incentive - will dig out links and post shortly

Our school does composting onsite (all of Dd's lunch time banana peels disappear there). And they have a paper recycling bin which they get paid for; that's right, it's a fundraiser -- can you sell the idea to PTA if no one else? Must remember to take some paper in myself on Monday.

Plus Bag2School (think that's the name) is a scheme where parents donate old but still useable clothes which are sold to another group (again, recycling as a fundraiser).
