Recycling - check
Turning down boiler - check

Is there anything else I should be doing? Can't help feeling I'm missing something....?

turn heating down by 1C
energy saving light bulbs
wash at 30.... then line dry if possible
closer curtains at night (to conserve heat in winter)
buy veg in season
food with low foodmiles

instead of cotton wool i use bits of fleece (and old jumper) cut up into about 8cm squares which i just wash... they are 2 years old now and still 'as new'

Walnutshell · 08/10/2007 18:31

What a good idea about the fleece/ cotton wool thing. This thread reminds me - what do people use instead of nappy wipes?

QuootieSpookypie · 08/10/2007 18:32

nappy wipes - flannels in home made liquid stuff.

bobsmum · 08/10/2007 18:36

I got a big stack of washable wipes from Ella's House - I was a sucker for the pretty prints. But I know people make them themselves. I boil up a big solution of chamomile tea and soak them in an ice cream tub ready for use.

If your car is a diesel it's worth looking into whether you can use vegetable oil instead of forecourt diesel. Some cars can use 100% veg oil, others top up a tank.

Saves 40p a litre too

We're getting a wood pellet stove/boiler fitted in the next month or so and solar panels which will do the hot water. All eligible for a 1/3 off grant from govt.

Boogalooblue · 08/10/2007 18:37

Grow your own veg??

Keep chickens and eat eggs/birds

ivykaty44 · 08/10/2007 18:41

LPG car - gas is 40p per litre and widley available all around the country.

flack · 08/10/2007 18:43

Transport, holidays, house insulation, find ways to reuse everything, minimising packaging in what you buy...

Scootergrrrl · 08/10/2007 18:43

What do you use for napy wipe liquid?

I'd love to grow stuff properly - we have tomatoes and strawberries and stuff in pots but DH is in the army so we

a) move every two years, normally to another country

b) live in rubbish draughty houses with antiquated heating and power systems

c) would need special permission to keep livestock

For nappy wipes liquid I boil up a cup of chamomile tea, add a little bit of oil (olive/grapeseed/etc) and a few dorps of lavender essential oil. Shake it and pour over washable wipes. Store in Lock-and-Lock type tub. Mix will usually keep for 3 days or so

FlameBat · 22/10/2007 14:02

Cloth nappies (can't remember how old your youngest is though

sophy · 22/10/2007 17:28

Switch to a green electricity supplier who generate most of their electricity from renewable resources. We use Good Energy. Slightly more expensive, but as you will be saving energy by not leaving stuff on standby and using low-energy lightbulbs, you are unlikely to notice the difference. Also we are prepared to pay a bit more for ethically produced food, so why not also for our energy.

sprout · 23/10/2007 11:36

Use public transport, cycle or walk. Insulate your house properly. Wear a woolly jumper instead of turing on the heating. Don't fly.

milkyJammy · 23/10/2007 19:39

some smaller things, seeing as the big ones seem to be covered

put lids on saucepans, only boil the water you need, use the library, check the temperature of your hot water tank (can't remember what is recommended, sorry)
