If you were struggling financially wouldn't trying to sell items that would get a few pounds be better?

Is there some background story here? I'm confused

mumof2horrors · 05/10/2007 21:52

not really I just wondered what other peoples views were.

If you were selling your own unwanted items, perfectly OK, but if you were getting items off freecycle for free to sell, certainly not.

mumof2horrors · 05/10/2007 21:55

no just selling own unwanted items

It isn't just people struggling financially that use Freecycle though. That's why I'm confused.

Also, speaking for myself (skint 90% of the time), I prefer to give away a handful of things that I could have made maybe £10-20 on in total, help someone else, and know that if I am in need, someone will come to my aid saving me money too. For example - I gave away a sofa (quite old and had it, but still wanted by someone), when my fridge died though, someone gave me a working one.

It is more about keeping stuff out of landfill and helping others than money.

Flamesparrow · 05/10/2007 21:57

It doesn't bother me if people sell my stuff on (it does if people ASK for things they intend to sell, but not if they want my offerings iyswim) - if they are prepared to get off their arse and ebay/car boot the stuff that I won't, then go for it.

like your new name...thanks for changing
not sure what u mean in your OP? if they wanted a few £s they would sell it rather than give away wouldn't they?

Millarkie · 05/10/2007 22:06

I'm sure if people are struggling then yes, they would sell anything they didn't need but somethings don't have a sale value worth the hassle of selling (especially if you aren't financially struggling)
I've freecycled a child's tricycle, a small slide, kids welly boots, kids videos, all sorts really - I know that I could have 'boot-saled' them, but they had hung around for months and I wasn't going to get round to it..too good to throw into the bin, so freecycle was perfect.

Millarkie · 05/10/2007 22:08

Oh, and I prefer to try to give them to people who don't seem like they are going to sell them on - but it's not always easy to tell.

laura032004 · 05/10/2007 22:08

I do ebay a lot of our stuff, but sometimes Freecycle is the best way to go in helping to declutter our house. I try and work out what it would sell for on Ebay, and how I could post it, and if it's not worthwhile, I freecycle it. It's amazing what people will take . I recently gave away about 10 massive boxes of 'stuff'. We'd taken it to a couple of carboots, but this was not sold. It was all decent stuff, but I wanted it out of our way, so I passed it on to someone else. So maybe the people need the money, but can't sell it, and need the space?

Fireflyfairy2 · 05/10/2007 22:15

I pass on things that I don't need/can't be bothered ebaying etc...

But if someone else wants to get off their ass & put it on ebay it/parcel it up/post it.. feel free I really don't mind what people do with the stuff I give them on freecycle... It's out of my house & not tripping me up so I am happy

Carbonel · 05/10/2007 23:07

Anything that I think would sell well but I cannot be boithered / want rid quickly I take to a charity shop. Things they won't take (electrical items / prams etc) go on frecycle.

It is amazing what people want, and great that my 'junk' can be reused and by people who would otherwise have gone without.

Minum · 06/10/2007 07:37

I go for the 3 pronged appraoch , Charity shops, ebay and freecycle-whichever works best for the item - really dont care as long as I can get rid of it, and its being used.

Also use charity shops and eBay to buy stuff.

cheritongirl · 07/10/2007 20:26

yeah i would go for a bit of selling and giving away really. Our local freecycle group seems to have evaporated anyway which is annoying!
