How many bags of rubbish do you chuck a week?????

Well I never.... after living here nearly 4 weeks now, im suprised at how easy it is to recycle the majority of what you would usually chuck away.

Where I used to live, the recycling was pretty much non-existant, the recycling centres were too far away to make it worth-while and we used to put out approx 6 black bags of rubbish a week.

Since we moved, we are recycling anything and everything possible, and only chucking 1-2 black bags a week!

So, how many do you chuck?!

Should of said our recycling system here is really good

Paper/card one week

Plastics and glass another

Garden waste everyweek

Plus subsidised garden composters and kitchen composters

LIZS · 06/10/2007 20:50

maximum 2 bin bags a week . Recycling collected once a fortnight , paper/cardboard always overflowing.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 06/10/2007 20:55

I would say our black wheelie bin is just about 3/4 full of rubbish once a week, was full when ds was in nappies. We have 2 plastic green recyling tubs with black lids these are over flowing when collected every 2 weeks.
I am probably the only person in my street who puts their recyling out, everyone else has 2 wheelie bins full each week and it pisses me off!
Our council only recycle paper, glass and tins so far. I would love big wheelie bins for recycling.

scienceteacher · 07/10/2007 07:50

We have two wheelie bins, but most weeks just put out the one. We only really use the second one when we are doing big clearout.

We are a household of 8, btw.

Blackduck · 07/10/2007 07:59

One (not full) baga week.
paper/card collected every other week
bottles/glass/tins/plastic collected every other week
Garden refuse collected every other week
veg peelings on the compost bin....

foofi · 07/10/2007 08:03

Our wheelie bins are only collected once a fortnight, with compost/garden rubbish collected on the alternate weeks.
My bin is usually half to three quarters full. I recycle everything I can, including plastics now, something our local authority has only just started recycling (although they don't collect it - you have to take it to be recycled).

Nightynight · 07/10/2007 08:23

jarm, totally understand your warm fuzzy feeling - I felt unreasonable smug for weeks after I swopped most of our light bulbs for low energy ones!

We have fab recycling facilities, and we use half a wheelie bin per fortnight.
The volume of plastic packaging that we take to the recycling yard (five minutes' walk from our house), is HUGE though!

BellaLasagne · 07/10/2007 08:38

2 bags - one of kitchen waste and one of packaging that is recyclable, but my local council have no recycling facilities in place which makes me really . So all of our cans, cartons, cardboard and plastic bottles go into landfill and there's absolutely nothing more I can do about it.

I've been lobbying the council for ages. We live in a rural county and there is a kerbside collection for those in the bright lights of the city but they won't fund for it to come out to us.

I have a compost bin and use that, and then every month I load up my car and pack it with glass and paper and drive it to the only recycling bank we have around here which is several miles away, so not terribly green . I re-use plastic bags, egg boxes go to the local market for reuse, yoghurt pots go to school for paint/glue etc. There really is nowhere else to recycle here so I'm at a bit of a loss to what else I can do.

We also have low energy bulbs everywhere and use a wood burner for heating in the winter.

Any other suggestions welcomed!

BiancaCastafiore · 07/10/2007 08:41

We throw out one bin bag a week.
We fill 4 recycling boxes a week.
We compost loads.

nutcracker · 07/10/2007 09:12

1-2 black bags

1 box of cardboard a fortnight and 1 box of glass, plastic and metal a fortnight.

morningglory · 07/10/2007 09:57

throw out 1 Brabantia 50L bag, recycle 7 council recycling bags (dh works from home and lots of paper is generated).

sammysam · 11/10/2007 12:12

1 bin bag every 2 weeks (sometimes a small bag as well if we had to take the smell bag out of the bin)

the rest is recycled. We use clth nappies so that really makes a difference

totalyfreaky · 11/10/2007 12:16

So where am I going wrong, we reycle as much as we can, but still have 4-5 bags of waste a week

sammysam · 11/10/2007 12:36

that should read 'smelly'!
we are only 2 adults and a 15month old.
we don't buy ready meals etc which cuts it down a lot.
I'm quite surprised how little we have

earthmummy · 15/10/2007 16:42

What sort of waste is it that you are throwing away totalyfreaky? Sorry if this question is a bit personal.

sophy · 16/10/2007 19:12

We are 2 adults 2 kids 1 dog and chuck out 1 black sackfull a week. Everything else is composted or recycled. For recycling which council does not collect (mainly plastic and cardboard) we take about 1 load a month to the recycling centre.

MummyTubb · 18/10/2007 22:07

1 black bin bag every other week, and 1 recycling box every week. Washable nappies help loads as does the compost bin and the dog!

MummyTubb · 18/10/2007 22:08

Should add that we are 2 adults, 2 kids and a dog.

FranMay · 18/10/2007 22:24

This is fascinating! I am the one who feels quite competitive with the neighbours in terms of putting out the least possible for the dustbin men and the most in the recycling!

kindersurprise · 18/10/2007 23:07

1 black wheelie bin a fortnight, now DS is off nappies it is often not full.

We recycle paper, glass, plastics, tins, batteries, just about everything. Oh, and organic waste.

I live in Germany, where this has been standard practice for at least 10 years. I used to get so annoyed when I visited Mum in Scotland and they chucked everything in the same bin.

jamila169 · 18/10/2007 23:22

about 3/4 wheelie bin a week, plus the poxy excuse for a recycling bin once a fortnight -
We compost anything compostable , but there's this pathetic little bin (like one you'd use for toys) for a fortnights worth of recycling, oH and they don't take plastic,or catalogues,or directories so it's just paper, glass and tins - we can fill it with paper in a week so DH takes glass and tins to recycling centre -We'd recycle everything possible if they'd take itbut they just do the bare minimum.
My mum OTOH is in a different council district and they take anything with the recyling symbol on it - she has about 2 black bags a fortnight and 1 huge wheelie bin of recycling - mysteriously, we have a garden bin as well - but they don't collect them between oct and march
