can you home compost 'eco-friendly' nappies?

i use a mix of nature baby nappies and washable ones (depending on how much washing has been done usually). but i am aware that the nature baby nappies will not actually get the chance to biodegrade in landfill, so what else can i do with them?

can i compost them at home? or put them in a wormery?

i dont think you are supposed to put nappies in compost at home tbh...

definitely NOT dirty ones

so what can i do with them that will let them degrade naturally and not in a land fill? They are allegedly 100% biodegradable.

Nothing other than bin them. That's why 'eco-friendly' nappies are a bit of a con in many ways! At least they're made with corn starch rather than plastic and they probably will biodegrade a bit

massivebigpantsface · 01/10/2007 09:14

even if you did try to compost them at home, the pile would be growing much faster than it could ever decompose! You would have a mountain of stinky nappies at the bottom of your garden!

ultimatley if you dont want nappies to end up in landfill yuo need to buy cloth nappies and wash them

ratfly · 01/10/2007 14:31

aw.
I was hoping there was some way of making sure they won't end up in landfill...
So back to cloth nappies again! I MUST try to keep up with the washing, its' just the drying in this weather takes so long.

gosh this debate has raged since 2002

i found websites that insisted you could put moltex in wormery, but need quite a big area, so not feasible for a standard backyard. i guess you could use the castings on flower beds, but obviously not vege.

I've put the non-pooey ones in my compost bin & they did bio-degrade, just left the sticky bits. DH told me off though, so now I (huhum) try to dry them out & use them on our fire
