Tvs/pcs on stand-by. Switch the bloody thing off when you're done with it and on when you want it.

Escalators which run continually instead of just when someone steps on it as the Italians/Germans have got on their Metro systems. Come on London Underground.... get your act together.

3Ddonnut that much protein, every day??? how about weekly disposables instead??

HairyIrene · 03/10/2007 10:23

cucumbers in plastic..
dont you all peel them anyway

overpackaged food in general

i cant buy mushroom filo parcels (m&s) anymore, silver foil trays wrapped like a mummy in so much plastic its like christmas day trying to open it...

pyjamagirl · 03/10/2007 10:27

Thunderpants if you contact your health visitor she might know of an organasation that will take them ,check them out and pass them on to low income families.

3Ddonut · 03/10/2007 10:52

Bundle, I did used to use weeklys but with the need for all the cleaners and their tubs eliminated, surely dailies are better?

Cappuccino · 03/10/2007 10:55

who peels a cucumber?

3Ddonut · 03/10/2007 11:00

not I not I not I lalalala

jacobandlysette · 03/10/2007 11:04

my mum apparently has to because the skins give her painful gas... she does tend to over-egg some things like this though

HairyIrene · 03/10/2007 11:05

me, i peel cucumbers!
aren't all the toxins in the skin?
it takes seconds with peeler thingy..

and why dont they shrink rap apples then where alot of people do eat the skins?
its just unneccesary daily overkill on plastic front...

3Ddonut · 03/10/2007 11:07

cucumber toxins? I eat loads of cucumber skins n'all and I'm fine!

Bundle · 03/10/2007 11:08

we get cucumber in our organic box, pretty toxin free imo

i'm not sure about which is better cDdonut

HairyIrene · 03/10/2007 11:09

in all my gorgeous greek salads in greece they were peeled so ner...

3Ddonut · 03/10/2007 11:10

ooohh and if I use dailies, I don't use them every day and save that way too.... you won't convince me, I love my dailies, they definitley work the best for me, I've worn contacts for 15years now, and they're the best so far!

HairyIrene · 03/10/2007 11:10

sometimes i de seeded them too!

Bundle · 03/10/2007 11:11

there's just something that grates about throwing something away that's well perfectly ok.

3Ddonut · 03/10/2007 11:15

but they're not perfectly OK, they're made of thinner stuff with a higher water content and they just don't last for more than one wear, I work nights and sometimes I put my lenses in for the day and take them out for a nap in the afternoon before work, when I get up for work, I put them back in, sometimes it's OK, but often, they break in my eye and I have to rake out broken bits of plastic and that hurts quite a lot! and it's not as if it's something big like a nappy or whatever they're tiny like [ ]
[ ]
this big! not even, then they shrivel when they're dry.

JARM · 03/10/2007 11:15

my most unfriendly items are....

my 2ltr petrol guzzling car (not a 4x4)
my tumble dryer, although am being very good with it now and using the airer more
my toilet duck flushable toilet cleaner things
using my pedestal fan all night to keep me cool during the night as pregnancy is not comfortable at the moment
I never wash at 30, always 40.... with the occasional 60 if whites are particularly grubby

On the plus side though, havent got my heating on, all appliances are switched off when not in use etc - changing to pre-pay meters has an effect on how you live!

If there was one thing i would love to do, would be to get rid of the car, but it just isnt practical. 1 bus an hour into town from here, and 1 an hour back, and its too far to walk.

Even the laptop isnt on that much now compared to when we had the PC in the old house - old PC was on almost 24/7, laptop is on for 2-3hrs a day tops.

HairyIrene · 03/10/2007 11:15

bundle..do you feel the same about potato carrot peelings?..
hell i skin tomatoes on regular basis...

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 03/10/2007 11:15

agree about over packaging fruit and veg. Morrisons had avocados individually shrink wrapped when i went on there the other week. wtf? i complained to the customer service person.

Also - LOADS of sainsbury's packaging is non-recyclable. Drives me nuts.

3Ddonut · 03/10/2007 11:16

btw, I do agree with you about disposable things generally...

Bundle · 03/10/2007 11:16

donut

HairyIrene · 03/10/2007 11:19

yes dirtygertienumber30.
...insainsburys...alot of their organic products you cannot recycle..have feeble apology on side....wtf

JARM · 03/10/2007 11:19

oh and meant to add disposable nappies, although have got cloth for baby due in november.... just hoping it wont impact toooooooo much on the tumble dryer usage.

We are lucky here in that we can recycle almost everything because we are on an estate accross the road from the household waste site, and the recycling collection takes all food waste, card and shredded paper. We recycle plastic, glass and tins by going accross the road 2-3 times a week.

We are now only using 1-2 black bags a week of non-recycleable waste - majority of which is nappies thanks to DD2 having a poo every half an hour forthe last week!

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 03/10/2007 11:23

yes hairyirene, am thinking of boycotting sainsburys (annoying though cos it's my closest shop)
In fact, i might write them an email and see what theyve got to say about it.

Washersaurus · 03/10/2007 11:26

I nominate any children's toy that is packaged in several layers including sealed plastic casing (that you need scissors or a very sharp knife to open and is then wired on to the packaging)....Why oh why do toys need so much packaging?

Oh..and toothbrushes!
