I don't know

NannyL · 24/09/2007 20:42

thanks for asking this question

i wanted to know too

(i hadnt been risking it but HAD considered using it to water my plants, but never dared just in case i killed them)

Now, I am no chemist, and I could be wrong, but I wouldnt be surprised if you could. I think some of the same components as in soap are found in chemically made fertilizer. Ammonium is found both in fertilizer and in urine, and in soap. I would not pour it directly over the plants, as I would not want any chemical residue on the leaves. However, bearing in mind acidity, and whether the plants tolerate/like alkaline, loam or high acid environment.

Can a chemistry oriented person please come along, as now I really NEED to know....

Yes yes yes - in fact you can use grey water from ordinary washing up liquid for garden - just not biological soap powder residue. In my grandad's day it was the preferred method of keeping greenfly at bay as well!

Oh, brill.

Thanks guys.

i have been pouring water which had ecover washing up liquid and surface cleaner on my veggies all summer and they have come out fine! Hadn't even thought not to!

PeachesMcLean · 26/09/2007 22:57

In fact, my dad rigged up a water butt to take the water from the washing machine to use on the garden. Wasn't ecover but something much more vile I guess. Plants thrived.

PeachesMcLean · 26/09/2007 22:58

(we didn't use it on veggies though - sorry - just missed that crucial bit of your OP)

Bit of a useless comment therefore

I made a spray with ecover wul for my tomatoes when they had greenfly. Unfortunatly my son decided to help me and sprayed the whole lot on in one go. The leaves all shrivelled up and fell off and whenever I watered the plants foamed! Mind you it was a bit overkill. Did get rid of the greenfly though - I think they starved as they had no leaves to feed on! Sure it would be find well watered down and might even provide some protection against pests.

My grandmother had an ENORMOUS hydrangea (sp?) in her garden, watered almost daily with the waste water from her washing up bowl.
