Best stretchy lid alternative to cling film?

YinMnBlue · 08/05/2020 22:36

Anyone using the ‘stretchy lids’ instead of cling film?

I mostly use cling film for wrapping part used fresh veg in the fridge.

Are they good?

Also good ones that are not too expensive.

Thank you!

I have always hated cling film (the smell, the taste!) So use baking paper with a recycled elastic band but recently a friend gave me a set of plastic mop caps for bowls and veg. They work really well but are small (the smallest will cover a lemon, the mid one a big onion and the largest a small bowl) they are washable and reusable and she got them in Ikea. Otherwise I put a place over the bowl.

A plate!

I have some from the Ikea. I've got the smaller round ones. They're okay but limited in use. They've got some bigger ones in square/rectangle shape now.

I've also got some round silicone suction type lids from Ikea that I rate!

Yes I have started using plates to cover dishes, but as I am shopping once every 2 weeks at the moment I haven’t got room in the fridge for all the had lemons / onions / red peppers etc to be on upturned plates. I need them squashed into the veg drawer with the half white or red cabbage etc.

Thanks mememe, they look good. But I keep seeing really stretchy silicone ones on my Facebook that seem to be possible to stretch round an onion. But they are really expensive.

I bought some but rarely use them. They're usually not the right size for what I want to cover. I put most things into tubs with lids, or occasionally use beeswax wraps which are much more versatile, albeit not a tight seal.

memememoi · 08/05/2020 23:03

@YinMnBlue have you got a pic of the ones you saw on FB?

PhoneLock · 08/05/2020 23:09

I've just bought a load off Ebay. None would fit round an onion though unless you put it in a cup.

NigellaAwesome · 08/05/2020 23:12

I keep everything in glass dishes with lids. Bonus that they all stack on top of each other.

YinMnBlue · 08/05/2020 23:28

mememe of course they have all disappeared from my timeline now! I’ll link when I see it.

The silicone material looks very stretchy so in the little video she had to pull it to make it stretch and fit over various sized bowls. Then the smallest one, she stretches snugly round a half onion, and it clings tight.

Silicone.

But I think they cost about £27 for a few of them.

I got some from non plastic beach website recently, were around £8, selection of sizes. Only downside is you prob want more of one particular size. Was using plates before but these take up much less space in fridge and less prone to smashing to floor when you open fridge door...

AnotherEmma · 08/05/2020 23:37

Reusable beeswax wraps.
You obviously can't wash them in very hot water because they melt Grin
But otherwise very handy.

Hagisonthehill · 08/05/2020 23:44

I have the stretch silicon lids,I can't remember how much I paid but it can't have been much or I wouldn't have them.I do have one small enough for a large onion but put onions in a lidded container to keep the smell from the rest of the food.
I find them very useful and got them because plates take up too much room. Also because you can easily see the contents they do not active the new life forms plate covered bowls can occasionally grow.

Hagisonthehill · 08/05/2020 23:47

Stretch silicon lids are about £10for 12 assorted sizes on Amazon.

I have these. Use them all the time. The little ones are good for half an onion/lemon/avocado.

YinMnBlue · 09/05/2020 10:40

RNBrie: those look just the job and cheaper than the Facebook ones. I’ll order those Smile
