Suggestions for online shops to avoid amazon

TooDamnSarky · 21/04/2020 09:36

For various (fairly obvious) reasons I'd like to switch my online shopping form automatically going to amazon to using smalller companies.

I thought we could have a thread where we list companies that have given good service and ask for recommendations. Don't mind paying slightly extra if it means benefitting from their expertise in getting good quality stuff.

I recently got some fab garden furniture from:
www.plant-theatre.co.uk/

Currently looking for somewhere for small electricals (eg headphones) and seeds.

Already did! Grin We are a dual-daschund household. Just pondering on the size for the youngster ..whether she's a small or a tween!

Ballyrobert Gardens do excellent mail order plants. Their website is informative and witty. Everything I’ve bought from there has been good quality.

I’m also a Cult Pens fan, loads of choice and really quick delivery.

CayrolBaaaskin · 12/05/2020 10:14

Why are you not using Amazon?

PenfoldsFive · 12/05/2020 10:14

And Baavet do fantastic wool duvets and pillows. No more sweaty neck!

Norugratsatall · 12/05/2020 10:15

Great idea for a thread - thanks! Will be following.

TooDamnSarky · 12/05/2020 10:29

@CayrolBaaaskin because amazon have structured their business to make a disproportionately small tax contribution to the country.
And because many smaller businesses are currently struggling.
And because I like the additional level of expertise that you pay for when using a smaller business that specialises on a particular range of products.
And because Amazon take a very large cut from the small businesses that sell through them reducing (already small) profit margins.

Smartcasual · 12/05/2020 13:14

I don't know how they are operating under lockdown but I can recommend Jackson Art Supplies Ihatethecold!

here

Smartcasual · 12/05/2020 13:16

Sorry that should read 'Jackson's'

Also they are operating on-line and dispatching within 7 days (according to a notice on their home page)

potterspotter · 12/05/2020 13:24

ElGuardiandenoche · 12/05/2020 16:44

@ihatethecold would somewhere like Baker Ross be any good for her. I used to use them all the time and they were really good.

ElGuardiandenoche · 12/05/2020 16:52

ihatethecold · 12/05/2020 16:55

HaddawayAndShite · 12/05/2020 20:38

I know there is an abundance of brownies but Bitsy’s Emporium will turn you into an addict. I highly recommend the gold bar blondies!!

TooDamnSarky · 12/05/2020 22:24

@AnnofPeeves thanks for the Wiggle recommendation. I've just spent loads on a birthday bundle for ds1.
I love that they actually have some cycling kit that isn't all covered In garishly colourful logos.

Great thread, thank you !
My personal “ lockdown award of merit “ goes to www.knollgardens.co.uk - good communication, excellent plants packed securely , hand- written note thanking us for our order and a follow-up e mail to check we were happy with the ornamental grasses.
Highly recommended!

AnnofPeeves · 13/05/2020 00:46

@TooDamnSarky glad you liked Wiggle. Hope it all goes smoothly now I've recommended them! They despatch quickly and a few weeks ago when I sent some shoes back which didn't fit, the returns process was very slick and the refund was super speedy

ihatethecold · 13/05/2020 08:14

I’m looking for a scratch off world map for my ds 20th birthday next week.
Even better if it has a frame around it or comes with one.

There’s a few on Amazon but I’d like to try an independent company.
It also needs to be here by next Friday.

DuckyMcDuck · 13/05/2020 09:05

Notonthehighstreet have one ihatethecold, I saw it when looking for something for DS's 18th

Smartcasual · 13/05/2020 10:09
