Suggestions for online shops to avoid amazon

TooDamnSarky · 21/04/2020 09:36

For various (fairly obvious) reasons I'd like to switch my online shopping form automatically going to amazon to using smalller companies.

I thought we could have a thread where we list companies that have given good service and ask for recommendations. Don't mind paying slightly extra if it means benefitting from their expertise in getting good quality stuff.

I recently got some fab garden furniture from:
www.plant-theatre.co.uk/

Currently looking for somewhere for small electricals (eg headphones) and seeds.

Can anyone recommend a good online haberdashery?

CuteOrangeElephant · 22/04/2020 22:56

@ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings I've used Little T's haberdashery before but she is temporarily closed. I am looking for one too!

Cake anyone?

These are amazing.

EvilPea · 22/04/2020 23:13

www.presentindicative.com/
Great for quirky geeky presents

www.woolovers.com/
Do jumpers etc. They’ve gone up in my estimations hugely after emailing their customer service out for anyone who just wants a chat.

velocitygirl7 · 22/04/2020 23:13

'I Want That Present' Lovely gifts, toys etc for children, the lady that runs it is lovely, she went the extra mile wrapping up and putting a little message on a gift for my nephew.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 23/04/2020 00:07

@TooDamnSarky my local music shop is now selling online, lovely independent shop and fully stocked with all the usual books
www.prestomusic.com/classical

Deathraystare · 23/04/2020 07:57

My favourite non-independent coffee shop, Cafe Nero, avoids UK corporation tax too, so I'll have to give them a miss.

Oh! Bummer!

TooDamnSarky · 23/04/2020 09:21

Thanks everyone. Some great suggestions here!

Jigsaws, can anyone tell me wheres to buy jigsaws?

60sPony · 23/04/2020 09:46

Books - Fox Lane Books
www.foxlanebooks.co.uk/

She doesn’t have that many books listed on her site but can source any book and gives excellent recommendations.

TooDamnSarky · 23/04/2020 09:47

@SwingingSally jigsaws get a mention earlier in the thread.

ladybranstonpickle · 23/04/2020 10:44

I just bought my parents a jigsaw from here:

www.jhgpuzzles.co.uk

Made in Dorset :)

RainMustFall · 23/04/2020 11:07

I agree with BinkyBlinky and still use Amazon. If I want to buy six different items I can do that in one transaction rather than going to six individual websites, providing my details six times, it doesn't make sense to me. I took a look at a couple of the places mentioned:

Flametree Publications -none of the jigsaw puzzles I wanted to buy are available until June-October.

Turner's Pies - have stopped selling

I have no interest in any of the other items.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 23/04/2020 11:13

Thanks for starting this thread TooDamnSarky Got quite a few birthdays/anniversaries coming up that I'd like to buy for. Smile

StarlightLady · 23/04/2020 11:42

In considering this, it’s worth remembering that a lot of small businesses depend on and sell products via the Amazon platform. Not every product comes from Amazon itself.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/04/2020 11:56

We usually get glycerine soap and hand wash from a farmers market stall. It's the only soap DH has found which doesn't kick off his eczema. They do shower gel etc too. Free delivery if within 10 miles of Formby - we're not, but the postage wasn't too much.

http://www.tigermuffinsoaps.co.uk

If you're in the NW (various preston, Lancaster, Blackburn and Wigan postcodes) Lathams of Broughton is doing deliveries ... we're resisting so farGrin

NormaLouiseBates · 23/04/2020 11:57

Sorry, I'm another that you'd have to prise my Prime membership out of my cold dead hands! As @RainMustFall mentioned above where else can I order cat food, piping bags, coils for my vape, note pads, pegs and a battery for my scales; all in one order? Amazon is so hugely successful because it works. The pay rise they've just given their workers is not too shabby either.

EvilPea · 23/04/2020 12:36

www.boobalou.co.uk/
Has eco stuff you didn’t know you needed. As well as soaps, cleaning things etc.

www.sarahraven.com
www.rhsplants.co.uk/

Good for seeds and gardening things

fatcakes · 23/04/2020 12:42

Totally fab sure for puzzles and games.
The owner works super hard to provide great service.

chilimartini · 23/04/2020 12:44

This is great! We must support the independent businesses now. Like a poster said earlier...I too am tired of making the rich richer. It's time for change and it has to come from us.

AdoraBell · 23/04/2020 12:46

Place marking.

TheGreatWave · 23/04/2020 13:06

I had a nice order from here, well mainly a hedgehog house but I did get a few art bits too.

www.craftyarts.co.uk

Maybe this for jigsaws

www.jigsawpuzzlesdirect.co.uk/

I regularly use world of books.

I agree with a pp though that Amazon own a lot of other companies so you need to be careful. I haven't used Amazon for years, when you don't it is amazingly easy not to.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 23/04/2020 13:54

www.birdkids.co.uk/

This is a great shop for kids toys if you want to support a cornish business :)

Coronacantcope · 23/04/2020 14:48

Anyone know of any company that will deliver a birthday type cake in North London? I've found several traybake options but no actual celebration cakes.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 24/04/2020 06:57

@Coronacantcope - what kind of cake? Adult or child? Fruit or sponge?

I’m sure the power of MN can find you something!
