How to clean jars

When you get to the bottom of a jar of peanut butter or chocolate spread, for instance, how do you clean it ready for recycling? Without washing a load of fat flakes down the drain or using lots of kitchen roll? Hacks needed!

Stick it in the dishwasher.

Newspaper instead of kitchen roll?

You can put little amounts of oils and fats down the drain if you chase it with a good bit of hot water. Restaurants do it every day.

Hot water in jar, screw lid on, shake vigorously for a little while and it should break it up.

This is a blunt option. I use a fork with steel wool attached at the end. It's quick and you don't have to use much muscle. Just be aware that it can scratch up the inside of the jar if you care about it.

@SarahHackey91 oh god, just imaging the sound of wire wool on a metal fork rubbing against glass makes me cringe.

Hot water and a vigorous Shake usually does the job, then tip it out onto some soil in the garden.
