Please recommend a soap dish

I’m swapping to bar shampoo and conditioner. I only have one place in the shower for a soap, can’t add more as is rented. It’s a small shower and water gets everywhere so hard to put in a soap that uses suction and bar would stay dry.

Please recommend a covered soap dish, ideally one that drains.

I just use a cheap slotted piece of silicone on an old plate. DH has a lovely wooden one he got from Lush.

I just came on to post the same question! I had a bamboo one that went black, so hoping to get a good recommendation for a ceramic one.

Iwillgotothegym · 27/01/2020 19:30

@Ibloodylovewomen I’ll have a look at the bamboo one from H&B - certainly better than nothing. How long did it last for you?

It lasted a couple of months, but the soap went slimey, so all in all not a great soap dish Grin.

I tried a soap dish and found it messy. Instead we have some little hessian type bags which hand from the shower tray. I remove the shampoo and conditioner bars to use them, but I leave the soap in one and use it more like an exfoliating soap. The bags can be washed and reused.

MonstrousBrigade · 27/01/2020 21:28

Second the bags. We’ve got one hanging from the shower head, or thereabouts. The shampoo only gets wet when it’s used, and dries nicely in the bag. When the bag gets too soapy, it’s used as a scrub and cleaned, before going back. It’s a about a second more faff than a soap dish, but the soap stays nice and dry, and you don’t risk losing a slimy soap in the shower...

What works for us is floating soap holders. You clean the wall/tile and then stick on the holder which has a magnet. Then you push a bottle-top-like disc into the soap or shampoo. We have them in bathroom and kitchen and wouldn't go back to soap dishes.

You can get them cheaply from Amazon if you are prepared to wait, or pay more and get them next day. Maybe they're in shops somewhere, but I couldn't find any when I was looking.

I've been looking forever for a nice pref stone dish...I gave up and got a resin one from range for £5.
Hopefully the amount of plastic I save using soap bars will outweigh the resin one day!

theneverendinglaundry · 28/01/2020 07:26

I'm currently using a small ceramic dish that I found in a charity shop. I noticed Asda sell plain white ceramic soap dishes too, although I think if there are no holes or ridges the soap could go soggy?

theneverendinglaundry · 28/01/2020 07:26

Sorry OP I realise that this is of no help to you! The bags sound like a great idea in your circumstances.

I have one of these Joseph Joseph Bathroom Slim Compact Soap Dish- White/Grey amazon.co.uk/dp/B0797KPX4H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vn-lEbW7X8D1H]]
Except I got it from TK Maxx

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2020 07:34

I use soap savers as they keep the soap dry and when they get a bit soapy they can go in the dish washer.

thedevilinablackdress · 28/01/2020 09:53

Agree with PP who said Joseph. I have had many* soap dishes over the years and this is the best. www.johnlewis.com/joseph-joseph-slim-compact-soap-dish/p3469332?sku=236871249&colour=Blue&lsft=s_ppc:2dxLIA-HOME,tmad:c,tmcampid:2&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyp7h04Km5wIVCLDtCh0ObARlEAQYASABEgKQiPD_BwE

*The one that " stuck" (guaranteed!!) to the tiles was a hoot. Waking me up in the night, clattering into the bath.

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/01/2020 01:25

That's the same one that I was talking about from TK maxx, although of course no guarantee they will have them there! :)

Nixee2231 · 29/01/2020 01:57

I use this one: www.amazon.co.uk/Ethique-Sugarcane-Shower-Storage-Container/dp/B07D7F9MWG?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Along with their shampoo and conditioner bars, which I adore and fit perfectly in there together.

SarahHackey91 · 29/01/2020 03:33

Go with a bamboo soup dish. They're very cheap, look decent and they're biodegradable so good for the environment.

BlackInk · 31/01/2020 13:45

I've got the Ethique one too (from Holland and Barrett). The lid stops the bar from getting soaked by the shower, and also stops it from drying out too much. I only buy the Ethique shampoo and conditioner bars when on special offer though as they are ££££! Sainsbury's are selling Eco Warrior shampoo bars for £4 (£3 currently in a sale) and they work really well -- bigger than the Lush bars and a third of the price.

doradoo · 31/01/2020 14:05

There was another thread a while back

Soap dish that doesn’t turn soap to mush... www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3478091-Soap-dish-that-doesn-t-turn-soap-to-mush

Had some good suggestions, I'm still using the amazon bamboo ones linked to on there.

Difficultcustomer · 01/02/2020 06:23

Thank you all. I’m going to look in my local Holland and Barrett and get one there if I can, or they sell them online. I got my bars for Christmas and the shampoo is lasting, but I’ll check out Sainsbury’s as well
