What do I do with 9 boxes of books?

I've tried ringing bookshops, they are a mix of fiction novels and atlas/dictionary type books, no-one is interested. Charity shops won't collect and none have parking nearby (are in pedestrianised parts of town) so I can't get to them as I am 7 months pregnant!

Any idea what I can do with them?

freecycle ?

DoubleBluff · 23/08/2007 13:32

Local hospital will take them for their book trolley.

Local library / hospital / nurseries / schools ?

I gave my DD's school a big box of books for their jibrary and they were really chuffed.

Can a mate collect and take them for you?

Spidermama · 23/08/2007 13:32

Yes, freecycle. It's the best decluttering service available.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 23/08/2007 13:33

hospital (as has been suggested), care homes (all types not just old folks ones), nursing homes etc may well appreciate them too

mummydoit · 23/08/2007 13:33

If there are any old people's homes/sheltered accommodation near you, they'd probably love the fiction books.

Wheelybug · 23/08/2007 13:34

Get your friends to look through them when they come round to see if there's anything they want ? I have done this with friends (both ways).

This is what i am intending to do with a pile of mine although DH thinks I have been good and decluttered....

There's a book bank at our local Tesco - I think it's Oxfam- have you had a look at your supermarket? They also have them in some of the local car parks.

Chirpygirl · 23/08/2007 13:36

I hadn't thought of nursing/care homes, good idea!

I took some books to a charity shop last year and the woman sighed and said' god, now I have to sort all these out, thanks' really sarcastically. If I hadn't been so tired I'd have turned right round and taken them somewhere else!

Tried Freecycle, got no interest apart from one guy wanting to know what they all were individually and could he come and pick a few out...um...they are piled in my attic, so no!

Excellent, nursing home down the road will take them (only after I clarified that they were free, I just wanted rid of them!)

The first one I rang said 'No thanks, we don't have any books as our residents don't read them' probably because you haven't got any!

i took lots of boxes of books to a local hospice once.

Chirpygirl · 23/08/2007 14:12

It's very selfish of me, I can't be arsed to think of what else to do so I am going to give them them all and let them chuck/sell/get rid of the rest....

I phoned social services and asked if they knew of anyone that wanted them. they suggested children's homes or the local women's refuge. The refuge collected them, so job done.
