Posted this in GH but no-one was too sure. I have heard mention a few times that bio is better at removing stubborn stains. But which is better for the environment?

Don't know but have you tried those soap nuts / Eco Balls? soap nuts or laundry balls

THey are much better than either bio / no-bio! and they're cheaper, too!

Biological washing powders contains enzymes which break down stains. Non Bio isn't usually as good as getting rid of stains/dirt as it doesn't have the enzymes.

Checked on line for evironmental impact

:-" neither system is perfect. Whilst the enzymes contained in a biological wash powder may take longer to disperse within the environment, the temperatures for washing can be lower than for a non-biological powder. The non-bio powder could take a higher temperature to do the same wash, which uses more electricity and water and this also has an environmental impact."

Roseylea, have tried both soap nuts and laundry balls. Neither seemed to actually clean our washing. Dh is an engineer (a mucky, oilstained one), ds a typical boy and dd a little feral, so our clothes are atrocious and chemical deep cleaning is unfortunately needed!

Whizz, so it is much for muchness really then?
I like washing on lower temperatures (to compensate for my non eco friendly detergent) so perhaps I should investigate bio?

I think bio is better. The only reason not to use it is if you are actually sensitised to the enzymes in it.

Non bio uses harsher chemicals and washing conditions to achieve the same results as bio.

Don't agree with everything Julia Hailes says, but she's made me into a convert washing at 30 deg. using Bio powder. She's one of many who say it's a myth about BioPowder causing skin problems, too.

Bonus: Our wash cycle is MUCH faster at 30. Soapnuts are our backup for delicate fabrics/certain colours.
