Meat free meals

Me, my partner and our two children eat meat every single day. We are wanting to try a week without any meat. But we are abit stuck for ideas on nice meat free meals. Does anyone have any good meals or recipes please Grin

I'm a rubbish cook and go for quorn. Mince, pieces, bratwurst, burgers. Saves thinking about cooking just substitute for the meat.

Plenty of vegetarian recipes like lasagne with just veg only are easy to do. I personally hate all pulses and lentils, so could never be a true vegetarian 🤣

theneverendinglaundry · 09/11/2019 16:14

Take a look on the Easy Cheesy Vegetarian website, tonnes of recipes on there.

We substitute burgers and nuggets with the Quorn equivalents! Kids dont even notice!

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 09/11/2019 16:16

Boiled pasta shells, fried califlower rice, cheese on top. amazing.

We do a lovely tray bake with roast peppers, butternut squash, apples, potatoes etc - roast in at gas mark 7 for 25 mins and then add Linda McCartney sausages and roast for another 20 minutes. I mix oil, cider vinegar, honey and whole grain mustard to make a glaze for the roast veg, just drizzle it over the top. You could use any veg you like really!

Tastes yum and dead easy.

Quorn chicken nuggets are brilliant, taste just like real chicken.

Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers also fab.

I also make stews etc with the quorn chicken pieces, plus spaghetti Bol etc and chillI with the veg mince. And cottage pie type things.

We’ve gone completely meAt free this year, apart from we still eat salmon!

Tomato and veggie pasta bake
Omelette, salad and wedges
Veggie sausage, veg and mash
Bean chilli
Cauliflower/broccoli/macaroni cheese

Kind of depends on what you normally eat?

sanmiguel · 09/11/2019 16:30

What's your usual week of meals and we might be able to suggest something more in line with your usual routine/cooking level/tastes?

I'm veggie/vegan and both son and husband eat meat but mainly veggie at home as easier to cook one meal.

nonamemummy · 09/11/2019 18:20

Thanks everyone. I kind of forgot about meat substitutes so that would make it easier actually! The foods we usually eat at the moment are things like shepherds pie, spaghetti boll, roast chicken dinner (or whatever meat really), pulled pork wraps, sausage & mash

Well you'll easily replicate all of them with meat free mince etc but maybe in time you'll go for a shepherds pie or pasta with a lentil bolognaise instead which I think is much tastier. Curry wise a simple sweet potato and lentil or chickpea curry with coconut milk and maybe spinach or any other veg you like would suit all tastes and even my (late) father-in-law who ate meat and 3 veg and refused to have anything other, loved my veggie curries.
If you're a bit stuck for ideas, I find the veggie recipes you get in them box schemes like gousto and hello fresh easy to follow and super tasty - maybe have a weeks subscription to something like that if you can get a money off code from someone (I can give you one!)
Good luck and hope it works out well for your family.

Cantchooseaname · 09/11/2019 18:59

Bean chilli- fry onion, garlic, add some spice and coriander stalks, couple tins mixed beans/ kidney beans, squirt of tomato purée, tin tomatoes, chilli paste to taste. Add coriander leaves at the end. At the frying off stage I chuck in any peppers/ courgette/ fudge veg that is kicking around.

Serve with wraps/ in baked potato/ rice/ enchilada.

Make double, freeze half.

Vegetarian 'meatballs' are a good start. Theyre so nice and convenient we prefer them to the meat ones now. I like the Asda, own brand ones. I just make a basic, spicy tomato sauce to go with them.

Bean and lentil chilli is also really easy and.tasty.

Veggie fritata.

Lentil and veggie moussaka (( fab recipe for this on the BBC food page ))

Cheese and broccoli pasta with salad (( just had this for dinner ))

Aldi, vegan quarter pounders or bean burgers served with wedges and salad.

Rice pudding made with coconut milk

We aren't vegetarian at all but these are meals we have regularly that go down well with everyone.

LimaOscarLima · 09/11/2019 19:05

I'm not vegetarian but I like meat substitutes, especially Morrisons meat free burgers literally taste just like real burgers, I also like Quorn nuggets, Quorn mince and Quorn hotdogs although reviews are mixed on them.
We have homemade pizza quite often which is really easy to make and doesn't have to have meat on it to be delicious.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 09/11/2019 19:09

If you like Indian food there are amazing vegetarian recipes. Ditto Italian. It's not marketed as " vegetarian " .....just meals that happen to be without meat

VioletCharlotte · 09/11/2019 20:00

Have a look on Pinterest. I'm vegetarian, I'm not keen on meant substitutes but do like the Caldron veggies sausages. You could use these to make a casserole. Veggie chillie is easy (chop up loads of veg to replaced the meat). Roast veg lasagne. Lentil bake, Lentil Dahl. Jack Fruit curry,

If you ever use Instagram, the account @todaywecooked on there is fantastic. Cooking for a family of four. I went veggie in Feb and cook her recipes at least twice a week, they’re so easy and have just made their way into our rotation.
