Tesco Naturals Vs ecover

NannyL · 13/08/2007 18:08

Is the tesco natural range really the tesco own brand of ecover?

It says derived from plants etc.... and in my local tesco they had a masssive shelf with their entire Ecover and Tesco naturals range side by side... i think it was trying to look like they were the same and all as good as each other...

does anyone know if the tesco naturals range is really as environmenally friendly as ecover?

Our Tesco is the same and I have bought quite a few of their products. I am hoping it is as environmentally friendly as Ecover.

massivebigpantsface · 13/08/2007 18:33

I've bought quite a lot too - its a lot cheaper than ecover. It shows the ingredients on the label but I haven't a clue what they are!

nightshade · 13/08/2007 18:35

have tried both and find ecover more effective.

Sheherazadethegoat · 13/08/2007 18:36

ecover's whole ethos is environmentally friendly right down to encouraging nesting birds in the factory. the same cannot be said of tesco's. they are just trying to nick ecover's business, in the great tesco scheme of things they will produce and sell you every dammed thing yyou use.

so in brief - no a tesco's product cannot be as ethical or environmentally friendly as an ecover one.

Quootiepie · 13/08/2007 18:38

Our tesco mixes them up so you have to look hard to get Ecover and not the tesco one, but no idea if it is the same type of thing. I presume they would be, with being right next to Ecover and looking nearly identical. Be pretty bad if it wasn't eco friendly stuff.

massivebigpantsface · 13/08/2007 18:38

good point she-goat

Sheherazadethegoat · 13/08/2007 18:39

cheers pants - can't decide if your name is really good or really repulsive.

NannyL · 13/08/2007 18:42

thats true she goat

  • tesco makes far too much profit IMO anyway.

would rather profit went to ecover who care about the environmant than tesco who

  • use battery hens
  • use european pork (I dont trust non british pork, refuse to eat caged pigs)
  • are HORRIBLE to britishfarmers!

I do wonder though if when tesco naturals products go down the drain they harm the environment to the same degree or more than ecover?

massivebigpantsface · 13/08/2007 19:13

she-goat -repulsive!

I would never have thought of that! Why?

Sheherazadethegoat · 13/08/2007 19:44

i don't know. it the the thoughtof big pants face i suppose. don't worry it is a lovely name!

BrummieOnTheRun · 13/08/2007 19:52

order ecover off ecotopia.co.uk, have them deliver to your door and ditch tesco completely

I've been wondering this..

I buy ecover washing powder & conditioner & I think that's better than the Tesco Naturally Range.

The dishwasher tabs produce the same results & tescos are of course cheaper, so I've been buying them.

We've been using Ecover showergel which is horrible - I prefer J/a/s/o/n

& we use the Ecover handwash....not that great, prefer Avalon, which Sainsbury's used to stock.

Off to investigate the weblink...thanks....

wheresthehamster · 15/08/2007 22:21

I thought all own brand stuff was actually made by the same people as the stuff it most closely resembled? So the background would be the same?

In the 80s I worked at Tesco HQ and I'm sure that's what one of the buyers told me.

smoggie · 15/08/2007 22:54

I use a mixture of both, but quite honestly find the Tesco multisurface spray much more effective.
DON'T use the washing up liquid on stainless steel surfaces. I used it on my new brushed steel hob (tip from an ex-cleaner) and it scratched it to buggery...think they have salt granules as abrasives or something in it.

iris66 · 16/08/2007 06:37

I got hideous contact dermatitis with Ecover washing up liquid (also a problem with fairy/palmolive etc when I used them) Tesco has been great - I'm gutted it's seen to be less environmentally friendly (Tesco washing liquid seems better at washing than ecover too)

How do you find out which is more environmentally sound?(taking the big company/other product issues out of the equation)

Highlander · 18/08/2007 17:05

I use BioD cleaner - MUCH nicer than the Ecover stuff. I'm OK with Ecover washing up liquid and non-bio laudry powder though.

Highlander · 18/08/2007 17:05

and we use JASON shower gel and shampoos. The citrus body wash is flippin' gorgeous

Highlander · 18/08/2007 17:06

E-cloths are fab for surface cleaning - no smears

Pannacotta · 18/08/2007 17:10

Agree with the others, Tesco is a very ruthless and effienct business. They are taking over Norfolk where I live and putting all manor of independents out of business so I make a point of boycotting them.
BioD is more eco friendly than Ecover (well in terms of animal testing anyway), but def Ecover in preference to Tesco.

fransmom · 28/08/2007 21:44

did i read right? ecover advocate animal testing?
who's bioD?

sorry just skimmed through thread and that kind of jumped out at me!

puffylovett · 28/08/2007 21:49

apparently they test on some sort of water flea or somethjing that's not even classed as an animal - hence theuy've lost vegan certification (or something, can't remember exactly !!)

i use a private company prods called homescents, made from essential oils - v lovely.

otherwise use ecover, won't go near tesco own despite the cost ! convinced it's nowhere near as eco friendly just because it's TESCO !

MollB · 28/09/2007 17:52

If you're looking for Vegan Society registered and environmentally approved washing powder try Aquados Simply Sensitive.
I buy mine at Sainsburys, it cleans as well as non environmentally friendly products, is non bio so kind on dds skin and is much better value than Ecover.

sammysam · 22/10/2007 16:34

just had a look at bioD-what products have people used and how good are they?

How much washing powder do you need to use?
how many washes would 2kg do? just trying to work out cost.

HeatherShepherd · 12/09/2008 10:15

Re ECover and animal testing . I'm boycotting the company because of their policy. Whilst they state on their products that they are against animal testing, in reality they have a 5-year rolling policy. This means that they will buy products from suppliers provided they haven't been tested on animals in the last 5 years. So, their suppliers can test on animals TODAY, and will still be able to make a profit from this testing in 5 years time. More information on their website about this.
Re BioD costs - the powder is 80ml per wash, which I take to mean you can get 25 washes from a 2kg bag (available at Oxfam for £6.99 I think). Works out at 27p per wash. Aquados Simply if you buy in bulk from their website (i.e. 20 tubs at a time) works out at 15p. I don't always seem to get a very good wash with the non-bio though Slightly cheaper is Faith in Nature's Clear Spring at 12p/wash if you can get it delivered free. Not tried it out in terms of quality yet though.
