Alternatives to bagged salad?

Hi the title says it all really. I've been trying to make small changes every week for a while now and I'm quite pleased with how much we've reduced our waste. I've reached a bit of a sticking point now - we go through a bag of bagged salad a day (not a humble brag; the kids don't touch it. I'm on a diet and filling up on spinach like it's going out of fashion). I was just wondering if anyone had found any other way of buying salad that's not wasting so much plastic?

seeds of a cut and come again variety and flower pot?

Could you buy whole heads of lettuce, for a start? Salad leaves are also fairly easy to grow your own, if you want to try that.

I keep a whole lettuce, peppers, spring onions, cress in the salad drawer, tomatoes, basil, in the kitchen and chop up a big bowl of ingredients every day. Much cheaper and tastier, you can then fiddle with adding, coleslaw, croutons, cheese, eggs, fish, meats as you fancy.

Can you not just eat chopped veggies instead? Cucumber, peppers, radishes etc?

Go to a proper greengrocer and get everything loose and without plastic. Just bear in mind that frozen spinach is often healthier for you than the ‘fresh’ variety as it’s often picked and frozen within 2 hours while loose spinach can be very old.

Can you grow your own? A few pots outside, maybe a mini greenhouse wouldn't be difficult.

I've seen indoor propagators which I have considered, but you wouldn't be able to grow the quantity you use.

You must be spending a fortune on spinach, can you switch to frozen of it is used in cooking?

We grow leafy greens including spinach all winter long, at the moment the leafy greens will just bolt but due to sow my next big batch of spinach at the end of August ready for the winter.

during the summer we don't even eat lettuce, we eat all the things that we crop and try to use it up as we go.

The best way of avoiding plastic on veg is really to grow your own, and if not then get a veg box each week and just learn to eat what you have.

If you buy loose org. Little Gems or Cos lettuce , they are much easier to wash than the other 'soft' lettuces. You just take a few leaves off and wipe with a cloth. They also keep better in greaseproof paper or kitchen roll in the fridge

Grow your own?
I sow lettuce / rocket seeds every 2-3 weeks in the late spring and it keeps me in greens for a few weeks. I grow it in pots which keeps the slugs at bay.
