Is anyone involved with this?

It looks like it could be an interesting holiday project.

Brilliant idea! We'll go searching when I'm on leave next week.

Sadly my parents had to get a hge beech tree taken down in their garden this week. Immense thing that had been there for many many years but it was beginning to lean alarmingly towards to house. Beeches have shallowish roots apparently. So sad though.

Yes we had to have a dangerous beech taken down its trunk had grown into 2 separate trunks and was very unstable.

Trees are wonderful and I really like the idea of everyone contributing to the map.

Perhaps it will help ensure they are properly protected and not overlooked.

Anyone been out doing this yet? I'm just about to plan a route for us to take dd and ds out measuring - we're in Southampton so hoping to find some big ones!!

lionheart · 04/08/2007 14:16

Going to do this tomorrow. Have got my eye on some fat ones.

I have a beautiful beech at the bottom of my garden. Fat and fabulous.

I think I may have made a mistake in my estimate of it age though - I make it about 737 years old which doesn't seem right at all!! It's "only" 250cm round.

lionheart · 04/08/2007 16:13

Some trees age better than others.

Trees make me happy

Cammelia · 04/08/2007 16:31

I've measured 3 trees, a yew, a holm oak and a large beech. All are between 9 and 10 feet round. Are they big enough to register?

NotADragonOfSoup · 04/08/2007 16:48

My beech is beautiful [sigh] It's not been messed about with so its shape is wonderful. Of course, I can afford to be sentimental about it as it's 200' from my house. It's only about 75' from my rear neighbour...

I want to name my house The Beech House because of this tree. And I don't want to move, ever, in case the next owner chops it down!

From the site:

Oak ? 3 adult hugs
Beech ? 2 adult hugs
Scots Pine? 1 adult hug
Rowan ? one adult hug
Birch ? a wrist hug
Hawthorn ? an elbow hug
Cedar of Lebanon ? 2 hugs

where an adult hug is about 1.5m

tissy · 04/08/2007 17:04

dh now thinks I am mad! have just run out into the garden and hugged our two silver birches. Both only just a wrist hug, so may qualify. Am ashamed to say I don't know if a birch and a silver birch are the same!

lionheart · 04/08/2007 21:15

tissy, see here and get your dh to hug some too.

martianbishop, we've got a gingko too. Alas, the council have planted several down our road as street trees, so its rarity value's rather lost now...
