We are trying to make small changes to our lifestyto use less plastics and be greener.

We (me and dh) currently buy a couple of tubs of hummus a week from a supermarket, which of course come in plastic tubs. I don't bother making my own hummus unless DS2 is home from uni, as there doesn't seem any point, the quantities are too small otherwise.

I'm considering going back to making my own but am not sure if it's "greener". Obviously there will be no plastic tubs, but I either have to buy tins of chickpeas or soak and boil my own which will use electricity. Then I have to whizz it all up in the food processor which has to be washed afterwards. Homemade hummus only keeps 3 days so I'd have to do this twice a week. The food processor is a pain to wash up and takes a lot of hot water to do so.

So which is "greener"? I don't suppose hummus freezes does it [hopeful]?

Google says you can freeze hummus so I'm guessing the greenest way is to make a large batch at once and freeze in small pots (or perhaps even ice cube trays).

Good - DH quite often likes hummus for lunch but doesn't always eat the whole bowlful, I'd not thought of freezing some of it.

If I can freeze hummus then that would be brilliant!
I bet I could use old yoghurt pots for 2 portions.

Yes it freezes really well. I make batches of about a kilo, it's less faff than small quantities TBH.

Also, what temperature do you keep your fridge? 3 days seems a very short shelf life IME, mine is 4 degrees and hummus is fine for at least 5 days.

To be honest I've never kept homemade hummus for longer than 3 days because I thought that was the maximum it would last so I've only ever made small batches that we always eat in that timeframe.

I'm loving the idea of making s big batch and then freezing it.
