Yeuch, I bet it smelt pretty horrible too. I sterilise it with a Milton tablet, partly because of the boiling dry thing but also because I'm a bit squeamish about using a pan that I also use for cooking.

Spidermama · 14/07/2007 20:12

I had mine so long it was no longer sanitary. I'm sorry to hear about yours. What a violent death. Mine at least died of old age. No amount of boiling or dishwashing could elimanate the odour of rotting mooncup.

Shit sorry. TMI again. This always happens on mooncup threads.

bran · 14/07/2007 20:13

How old was it Spidermama? I can't remember now how often the website recommended changing them.

suezee · 14/07/2007 20:14

Oooooh! I'd be concerned about vanish up my vestibule.

I'd had mine about seven years when it showed erm, olifactorial signs of perishing.

Suezee, it's difficult to describe the pros and cons. Everyone I know who has got themselves a mooncup loves it. It takes a bit of practise to get used to it then it's as if everyone else with their tampons and pads are a bunch of loons who've not seen the light. Hard to describe but all I know is it goes deep.

Mooncups don't suck away all your moisture in the way the other stuff does (including washable pads). They're so simple and pleasing.

My advice - take a leap of faith and give one a try. You won't regret it.

Good decision Calif.
Perhaps I should have tried to revitalise my old cup similarly.

terramum · 14/07/2007 21:49

I did the same as you UniSarah - boiled the pan dry. Was wondering what the funny smell was whilst watching CSI...so wandered into the kitchen to find the pan containing a rather black cracked & half melted mooncup that we had put on an hour before hand ....last time I have ever put anything on the hob without setting my mobile phone timer ...and the last time I will ever boil a mooncup. New one is just being washed very thoroughly by hand ...felt far too un-liberated to ever be without one again!

whoops · 14/07/2007 21:54

I nearly did the same but managed to save mine just as the pan had gone dry!

BBBBasilisk · 14/07/2007 22:00

mone boils away merily in a microwave in a cup of water. It did nearly fall down the toilet once but was just a near death experience.

gooseegg · 14/07/2007 22:06

I haven't yet got a mooncup - but why would you need to boil it?? Surely a good wash with soapy water would do. Or should I start asking dh to pre-dip in the kettle too

Pollyanna · 14/07/2007 22:18

yes I've done that too. The whole kitchen was covered in ashes.

bran · 14/07/2007 22:19

The manufacturers recommend that it is sterilised between periods gooseegg.

Spidermama · 14/07/2007 23:14

I put mine in the dishwasher.

chilledmama · 14/07/2007 23:22

I've only had mine for a few months and sterilised it with milton prior to first use but have only given it a handswash since (thorough handwash!!!!!). I keep meaning to sterilise it again but then don't cause I'm lazy! It has had a close shave with the toilet but I braved the bowl and retrieved it.

northender · 14/07/2007 23:43

Have never boiled mine am complete slut! A good wash in hot soapy water is all mines ever needed.

hufflebranpuff · 14/07/2007 23:47

Well, your fanjo your choice. I sterilise everything that goes anywhere near that region (with the exception of dh who gets a jolly good wash instead) since I had my first and second every outbreaks of thrush following a course of anti-biotics. I don't ever want to have it again.

NannyL · 15/07/2007 14:52

i dont boil mine either and soak it in a solution of milton

ZisforZebra · 15/07/2007 21:32

I boil mine at the moment but am thinking about Milton - how long do you have to leave it in there?

pyjamaqueen · 15/07/2007 21:35

I have boiled mine - I just rinse it under the tap! So far haven't caught anything horrible.

pyjamaqueen · 15/07/2007 21:37

I meant NEVER boiled it.

hufflebranpuff · 16/07/2007 13:46

Milton doesn't take very long, 15 mins I think.

UniSarah · 16/07/2007 15:20

might switch to an occasional bath in milton, less likely to go wrong. all the cost benifits went up in smoke with teh death of teh last one.
