OK - I put some baby/ toddler books and toys up for grabs on my local Freecycle, and here are the responses I've had (in order of receipt). Who should I give them to, and why? Please vote:

I'd give them to the first person.

LilRedWG · 09/07/2007 21:22

I'd go with A - first come first served and all that!

MerlinsBeard · 09/07/2007 21:22

not childminder one, nor julie who mailed twice - too eager!

why not the first one?

Pixiefish · 09/07/2007 21:22

first come first served

CarGirl · 09/07/2007 21:23

perhaps who lives closest to save on carbon footprint?

Legacy · 09/07/2007 21:24

Why not childminder one Mumof?

I am a Freecycle moderator and the whole idea is keeping stuff out of landfill and lowering emissions so please give it to the person that is most local to you if no one is local pop it down to your local charity shop.

Isitreallyme · 09/07/2007 21:28

I'd go for first come too - but not sure why it nmattesr - recycling is recycling after all !

trixymalixy · 09/07/2007 21:29

A, first come first served

northender · 09/07/2007 21:31

They're all polite and genuine sounding (except Julie "when can I collect it?" too presumptuous) so in that case I'd give to the first responder or put names in a hat. They're all more polite than some responses I've had from freecyclers

SecondhandRose · 09/07/2007 21:32

Talking about moderating for Freecycle. My God you should see some of the stuff people go on there wanting. Bearing in mind the site is about keeping stuff out of landfill. So in other words anything you are going to take to the tip you advertise on Freecycle instead.

In the last couple of weeks we have had wanted ads for a car Sat Nav (and she would drive anywhere to pick it up!), laptops - many requests, 8ft trampoline (yes the size was specified). One guy keeps asking for guns and gun parts but his get deleted!

funnypeculiar · 09/07/2007 21:35

I would give it to the most local - I hate that freecycle stuff goes to the person who is sitting on the computer at the right time.
Or split the book pile and get whoever picks up to spread the booty

bilblio · 09/07/2007 21:39

I'd give them to Mike.
I prefer chatty emails from people who make it clear how much, and why they want them.

I know a lot of people have said to give them to Anne because she's first, but they're for her Grandkids, they'd probably get more use by a parent. Just because someone emails first doesn't make them most deserving, it's unfair on the people who don't spend all day sat by a PC.

elasticbandstand · 09/07/2007 21:40

julie, who said hello again

elasticbandstand · 09/07/2007 21:40

well julie relaly wants them,.

Legacy · 09/07/2007 21:46

They're all pretty local, so there's not much in it.

I was thinking along the same lines a Bilblio - that they'd get more use from a parent, rather than sitting in a dusty box at a grandparents.

I know it doesn't really matter, and it's all recycling, but I'm just interested to see the logic people apply.

Interestingly, I just had an e-mail from our Freecycle moderator today asking people NOT just to give things automatically to the first person, but rather to wait a day or so to see all responses, as some people only get the 'daily digest' at the end of the day.

From his e-mail address (not posted here) I suspect Les is a trader.

Legacy, I must admit I am already thinking of giving up on moderating because of the greed. People just don't get the idea of what Freecycle is for even though they get reminded all the time.

Legacy · 10/07/2007 08:43

SHR - I agree, and also how rude people are - saying they want stuff then not turning up, all the e-mails saying "when can I collect it luv" etc!

I've had a number of good Freecycle experiences, but I sense that traders and more unscrupulous people are piling in now. I suppose if someone's willing to sell it on for a few quid that's still better than land fill though, and it clears my loft!

snowwonder · 10/07/2007 08:48

first person.....

beep · 10/07/2007 08:54

i sometimes search and see who also offers stuff if I cant decide

elasticbandstand · 10/07/2007 21:55

why cant you just give to charity shops?

Legacy · 10/07/2007 23:11

Because the ones around here are overflowing with stuff and so much of it just gets thrown in the skip.

we took a whole load of good stuff left over from the school toy fair, and none of the charity shops would take it. They said they didn't have room, and that even stuff they took was given a week to sell and then binned.

I'd really rather it went to someone who wants and will use it.

Twinklemegan · 10/07/2007 23:14

I've had no luck at all in securing Freecycle stuff. Have tried a few times (we really are quite hard up at the moment) but keep missing out. I think this is partly because I'm a work all day and can only check the digest on an evening.

Spider · 10/07/2007 23:14

PMSL @ e and f. Sometimes I get the feeling there are people who just want something, anything, for nothing of freecycle and they're building up clutter mountains or selling stuff on ebay.

I love freecycle though.
