so Im trying to be more ecco friendly this year, got a mooncup/ washable liners, recycling lots more, not buying any more anti bac cleaning wipes etc (you get the gist). Not prepared to do a bamboo toothbrush (we use electric and i love it). Washing up sponges, the non scratch ones....theyre plastic? What do I use instead???

There's a thread about this over on Housekeeping that has some useful links 😀

I've been wondering the same!

These:

I've saved loads too as they rinse really easily unlike regular sponges.

I use silicone scrubbers like these. I also have one with a hard scraper bit on which is useful.

This set here was a good value one with storage bag things that can be frozen and microwaved, stretchy cling film replacement stuff and some washing up scrubbers.

You could knit or crochet dishcloths out of cotton yarn (or even cotton string). They aren't quite as harsh as a scourer, but still very effective, can be bleached or boiled, or just slung in the washing machine with heavy things like towels pr jeans.

BlackInk · 29/01/2019 14:49

I use these in place of the sponges with the scourer on one side.

They're cloth on one side and scratchy on the other. They wash really well. I've had mine for about 6 months and so far so good.

You should probably go for Silicon scrubbers.

BlackInk · 31/01/2019 16:53

Silicone isn't biodegradable and not many places recycle it though. Also silicone scrubbers would be good for scrubbing, but not general wiping / washing up.

I have made my own cloth 'sponges' and then pop them in the washing machine when they are dirty to reuse. I also make my own loofah pan scrubs and use a wooden brush.

Another vote for knitted cotton cloths. Moss stitch is good.

emeraldsparrow · 01/03/2019 06:08

I found sponges made from recycled materials once, but I can't recall the brands name.
