Is there an ethical alternative to coffee mate?

As a family we have made the decision to boycott Nestle products, something we should’ve done long time ago, no problems with finding alternatives for anything apart from Coffee mate.

DP and I love the stuff in our coffees, could anyone suggest an ethical alternative?

TIA

Asda do there own version coffee whitener it's called . I don't drink coffee so couldn't tell you if it's any good but DP gets it for work all the time

I didn't know what that was so I looked it up - it's made of corn syrup, hydrogenated vegetable oil and sodium caseinate which is some kind of dried milk solid.

Can you substitute with some fresh milk and normal sugar? Or do you need something that is shelf stable? The idea of pouring vegetable oil into coffee is pretty gross so I doubt you want to substitute that part of it!!

Thanks @boringbetty I will give it a try

@xiaoxiong I am aware that it’s not the most healthy thing but I don’t have a lot of vices and it makes me coffee taste bloomin lush Grin

condensed milk?

BlueCowWonders · 06/01/2019 17:28

Double cream. Fab!

Cynderella · 06/01/2019 17:29

I used to use this years ago when teaching in a school with no fridge in the staff room. In my last school, milk was provided if you paid in, but they were always running out, so I've weaned myself on to black coffee. It wasn't easy, but now I'm happy with it. It means I no longer have to drink coffee with long life milk in cafes!

Coffemate is unnecessary and a pretty horrible thing to put in your drink, so on ethical grounds, it should be avoided. If you really like it, you could try an alternative. I don't suppose the Asda one will be that different.

You could also make your own. Lots of recipes online. For example www.elizabethrider.com/healthy-homemade-coffee-creamer/

@cynderella Thanks, I’m going to give making my own I go. I cannot bear black coffee so that’s a no no.

Sainsbury’s do an own brand which is worth a try.

madvixen · 06/01/2019 19:10

It would be worth checking who makes the own brand alternatives as it could well be made by Nestle and just sold under own brand packaging.

IWannaBeYourFordCortina · 06/01/2019 20:03

I didn’t think about that @madvixen how would I go about checking that out?

Is it something that the supermarkets declare?

Milk??
Non-dairy milks eg Oatly Barista

newtlover · 07/01/2019 17:44

milk ffs
if you must, buy full fat milk, organic and locally produced for preference
I think thinking ethically about what we buy should lead us to the simplest, local option, one that benefits the local economy and small businesses and doesn't damage the environment or any humans. Not a highly manufactured alternative to a simple and wholesome product.
